Making a choice about a child’s education is perhaps the most important
decision a parent is faced with. All children have different needs and
interests and investigating all of the educational options available is
crucial to finding the school that is right for each child. Over the
past decade, the educational options for families living on the Riviera
Maya have increased exponentially.

Do you have a desire to move to Mexico but are just not sure
what to do about schooling your children? The questions keep coming to you . . . . Is the schooling any
good? Does anybody speak English? How much does it cost? How do we find out
what schools are available to us? What do they do in the school? Will my kids
fit in? Is Mexico even safe for the kids?

Educational options for foreigners with children in Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya.
One of the
most frequent e-mails we receive are from families from all parts of the globe
who are looking to relocate to Playa del Carmen, or other parts of the Riviera
Maya, with their children. Of course prior to making the move they want to
research educational options in our area. As a former teacher who has taught
both in the United States,
as well as here in Playa del Carmen, I thought I would give you all an updated
list of options and local area schools.
Ak Luum International School in Playa del Carmen Buys Property to Build
Monday, 11 December 2006
Ak Lu'um International School slated to start building a new facility for the 2007-2008 school year.
Ak Lu’um International School is beginning to build its permanent site,
which will be inaugurated in August 2007. The school grounds, measuring 10,000m2
are 800 meters west of the Playa – Tulum road, just after El Palomar and before the Xcaret turnoff.
As Ak Lu'um plans to open its doors for their first school year in Playa del Carmen the community shows their support.
July 21st. An unusual grey
and rainy day; this is the date we have chosen to host our wine and cheese
afternoon at Ak Lu'um International School. Predictably the streets flood and
we fret about attendance... It is now 6:00 in the afternoon. There are familiar
faces and new ones. We feel so lucky to have the support of positive parents,
teachers and friends. We chat to our visitors while the children play in the
classrooms or splash about in the puddles outside. The garden looks fresh and
vibrant and the pool has filled up more than enough with the rain....
