What, it's that time of the year ALREADY?! Many of you may recall that there is a Three Legged Bar Crawl that benefits the Riviera Maya's Bomberos (Firefighters) in Playa del Carmen.
Each year, teams enter this fun race and through their entries and your generous sponsorship raise money for much-needed equipment and training. This year will be the 9th Annual Training Academy. This weeklong training exercise is often the only training our firemen will get all year, so its importance cannot be overstated. Also our Fire Department is always in need of new equipment, and must raise money to purchase any equipment beyond the government provided bare minimum.
Friends of AK Lu'um- a new organization dedicated to education in the Riviera Maya.
Friends of Ak Lu’um is a new organization, based out of Playa del Carmen, that will be offering educational scholarships to Mexican Nationals that otherwise would not have an opportunity at a quality education. Promoting holistic education, Friends of Ak Lu’um is working in cooperation with the Ak Lu'um International School, the first ecological school in the Yucatan, that follows a humanistic, Anthroposophical approach to education. Friends of Ak Lu’um are currently applying for non-profit status in the United States to open up further opportunities for fundraising in the United States, and they will be hosting their first fundraiser on February 20th, 2010; Amore! A night filled with fun, friends, and food……

Los Bomberos to participate at the PGA Tour- Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen February 17th - 21st, 2010!

In Janaury I received a phone call from a Larson Segerdahl, Tournament Director of the Mayakoba Golf Classic; Mexico’s Only PGA TOUR Event. He asked our Foundation, Bomberos de la Riviera Maya. A.C., to participate by providing Ambassadors (volunteers) on holes #1 and #12 at this year’s tournament. Each year, the Mayakoba Golf Classic is supported by nearly 500 Ambassadors allowing the event to contribute significant funds to a wide variety of deserving charities and foundations. To date the event has donated $700,000 USD which has a direct impact on the Playa del Carmen Community.

Playa del Carmen and Akumal pull together to help make a difference for the people of Haiti.

Yesterday afternoon, the beach in front of Wicky's Restaurant in Playa del Carmen was the place to be for great BBQ and live music! The fundraiser, "Hope for Haiti", benefiting, Doctors Without Borders, was hosted by Wicky's, attracting hundreds of local residents and visitors alike. Many came to enjoy the excellent buffet presented by Head Chef Collin Kelley, others came to enjoy the beach and the entertainment provided by J.J. and The Nasty Bastards Band, Chris Bolister, Brent Parkin, Mike Grabow, Barefoot Skinny and Gary with his Gringos Perdidos!
On Sunday January 24th, fund-raising events will be executed simultaneously in Playa del Carmen and Akumal to raise much needed funds for the victims of the earthquake that wracked the small island nation last week. “Hope for Haiti” is a local, grassroots campaign whose mission is to raise badly needed funds to support the relief efforts going on in Haiti.

As the year draws to a close, we started to compile a list of all the people we would like to thank for their wonderful help and support throughout 2009. However, as the list grew longer and longer, we realized what an impossible task it would be. Our list of Peanut Pet Shelter friends is over 800 strong. The warmth, kindness and generosity of our friends keeps the shelter running and the animals alive - fed, wormed, vaccinated, medicated, medically treated and sterilized.

14th Dec. 2009 at Capt Dave's "Bad Boys Beach Bar" on the beach between 2nd Y 4th Calles from 11:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Like many great ideas, El Mundo para Puerto Morelos, was created one evening in a bar. In the aftermath of devastating hurricanes Wilma and Emily in October, 2005, a group of local expats were made aware of a disturbing problem in one of the primary schools. With an enrollment of 700 and a water system damaged by the storms, the students and faculty were only able to flush the toilet twice a day, and had no water for hand washing. The locals responded by reaching into their pockets asking how much it would cost. Thus began the organization and establishment of El Mundo para Puerto Morelos, SC, (The World for Puerto Morelos), and its first project of successfully replacing the school's entire water system.
Starting October 24th, 2009 Ak Lu'um International School will be hosting a series of Sustainable Living Workshops in coordination with BambuSur; a locally owned, ecologically responsible building company. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about sustainable building techniques, materials, and eco-friendly systems.
Centro Ecológico Akumal will be putting on the 7th annual Turtle festival this coming weekend! October 16th through October 18th, 2009. Arts, music, sand sculptures, fire dancing, as well as information on the sea turtles, will be presented over the three day festival.

Saturday April 18th, 2009 at Zenzi; located on 10th Street and the beach in Playa del Carmen.
The evening begins at 6:30 PM for cocktails, followed by a gourmet buffet...
