A Two Part Series on Xcaret and the Spectacular Dinner Show
Part1:
Okay, I know I have lived here for almost 4 years, but
I have never been to the Xcaret Dinner Show. The only other time I
have been to Xcaret was about 3 years ago when I was teaching here in Playa del
Carmen. Part of the programs that Xcaret and Xel-Ha offer are free entrance to
local area schools so when I went 3 years ago I brought 21 children between the
ages of 3 and 11. Yes, I know I am crazy, and although I had fun with the kids
I certainly didn’t get to enjoy the park, let alone the dinner show. So just a
few weeks ago I arranged for a group of 35 people, who were a company visiting
Playa del Carmen from Sweden,
to go to Xcaret and the dinner show. I decided this would be a perfect time to
go and check out the park so I joined the group for the afternoon.
We decided to go around 3:00 PM, which would enable us to have a few hours to enjoy Xcaret before the
show began at 6:00 PM. Once we entered the park everyone went their separate
ways to go and see the sights they were interested in, and Web Guy and I
decided to head to the underground river attractions. There are lockers
available right near the entrance, for only 2.00 USD, or you can choose to
store your things in a locked bag. The bag is secured with a lock, you take the
key, and then the bags are taken to the exit at the end of the river for you to
pick up when you are finished. We opted
for the lockers as we weren’t sure if we would float the entire river or get
out at one of the exits along the way. We then got into our suits, grabbed a
life jacket, which are required, and headed down into the wild blue yonder.
There is snorkel equipment available for rent (18.00 USD), or you can bring in
your own, but we decided to just go and float rather then snorkel.
Once you
trip on down the path you come to a fork in the road with the right continuing
down the path and the left going into a lit cave. Hmmm, which way to go? Luckily
there was a decision making snake attached to a rock wheel so we stepped up and
spun the snake which pointed us towards the cave. Basically either way will get
you to an entrance into the river, but there are two rivers that eventually
come together at the end lagoon. We entered the river in a crystal clear round
pool, with an amazing waterfall cascading down, and the best thing was we were
the only people there! We plunged into the fresh clear waters, and began our
leisurely float down the waterway. For over a kilometer we cruised along
looking at the birds, floating on our backs, and looking up into the sky, and I
have to say it was amazingly relaxing. We weaved in and out of caves, where at
some points you could barely see a hand in front of your face, a bit creepy, but fun
too! At one point we came out of a dark part of the cave and came into an amazing
amphitheatre with an exquisite stained glass ceiling, which allowed multiple
shades of light to bounce off the water and reflect onto the bromeliads growing
out of the walls. After about a half an hour we popped out at the end into a
beautiful lagoon, with pink flamingos happily lazing about, and the Caribbean Sea just on the horizon.
We got out of the
river and headed back towards the front entrance where the lockers are located.
Along the way we saw the big lazy manatees, the tapir house, monkeys, dolphins, turtles, and various other
creatures that I am not sure what they even were* By the time we got dressed,
and grabbed a snack and a beer, it was time to hook up with the Swedes and go on
to the dinner show……..Stay tuned for part 2 on the dinner and show at Xcaret Friday December 8th
