Have you been thinking lately about what a beautiful area we live in? It would be nice to keep it that way wouldn’t it? In fact it is probably essential to the Riviera Maya’s survival right?

Fortunately the Riviera Maya Hotel Association feels the same way and is right on it! In fact Bianca Orvananos who is head of special projects for the hotel association is actually the one right on it.

They have a special program in the works that benefits us all ............

The Riviera Maya Hotel association will be working with support from both the Travel Foundation out of the United Kingdom and Conservation International.

Recycling logo3 Key Words: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle.

The first program that will start in the New Year will be EWT – Environmental Walk Through. They will start with 16 hotels throughout the Riviera Maya.

A team of specialists will work with each hotel to teach them the things they can do to help preserve our environment. Things like conserving water and electricity and how to recycle more as well as the importance of using environmentally friendly products. The results will then be monitored for a period of one year to make sure all the changes are properly implemented.

Bianca is so enthusiastic she cannot wait to get started. “This program will show the hotels the way they can make a difference in small manageable bites; one step at a time so that it is not too overwhelming for them” she tells us. “They may have to change many systems in the hotels and this can also be expensive.” This actually has not seemed to be scaring away many hotels as the project has barely received the green light and hotels have already been calling Bianca to see if they can be part of the project. They are now asking for the help.

The goal is to soon have all 118 Hotels who are part of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association on board with this program. Why not? It is of benefit to all and everyone wins! Go team “Keep the Riviera Maya beautiful” go!

Watch for future articles in PMN on ways we can help preserve our beautiful Riviera Maya. We are currently researching local recycling options and will have a list of who takes what soon. We also plan to highlight area businesses that are doing their part to be environmentally friendly.
