Another wonderful day in Paradise.

My Big Fat Mayan Family Jungle Adventure

by Burleigh Sullivan

We jumped in the car and left Playa del Carmen at 7am sharp. With 3 kids, a wife, and their friends in the car, it was a trip destined for the books. Little did I know. The plan was simple - Go see a few Mayan Ruins and jump in something called a Cenote (See-Note-Tay) and back in time for an early dinner. Little did I know.

So we get to Tulum and make a right traveling down a small two lane road heading deeper into the jungle. “Hey, is that a monkey?” screamed one the excited teens hiding in the SUV.

30 minutes from Tulum, we arrived at Coba. Surprise, it’s on a lake! I had no clue!

Wow, that’s cool. A lake in the jungle….. no wonder they built a city here. Now since we are locals, the fee was nada (nothing). Now that was nice.

So we go in and a guide comes up to us and asks if we want a tour. “Heck yeah…….. said the little one……..”. So we paid the 400 pesos ( about $ 37 usd) for a 45 minute tour.

Our guide was great – giving us details on the city, it’s history, and giving us a basic knowledge of what was going on. Then we jumped on some bikes and rode deep into the city………..boom, there was the Gran Pyramid. Climbing up and up, the GPS said 167 feet. Very Cool!

Lake Coba

Just being in the Mayan Jungle with all the ruins around, you can feel the energy. It was so special and unique. What a great scene.

We lasted about 2 hours at Coba and drove back to Tulum. Right before we jumped into the Gran Cenote which is located about 4 km from Tulum on the same road.. So, we parke the car and see all these divers exiting. Divers? What, only divers here! We don’t dive. We can barely swim!

We asked them about it and said it was freezing cold but it would be okay! Being that is was 90 degrees F outside, who cared how cold it was……….it wasn’t!

Gran Cenote

We jumped in and oh my! The most beautiful place on earth! Can’t Be! It felt like a pre-fabricated Disneyland adventure ride ………but it was real - not fake. We stayed in the water over 2 hours – just floating, swimming, and exploring the caves and stalactites et al…. Wow!

I have no words to describe this place. Just go and feel what I mean! Go!

Another great family day trip!
