Not even Hurricane Wilma can stop Kwan Moo Do in Playa del Carmen! After Hurricane Wilma finally left our beautiful Caribbean coast a select group of people were holding their breath; would Playa del Carmen’s only multi-disciplined martial arts studio survive yet another hurricane? The studio, located on Calle Corazón overlooking Fifth Avenue, is covered by one of the typical regional palapa roofs and has more than 25 windows. Although the construction was solid and strong, much like the attitude of the studio, would it be able to confront the strong destructive forces of this natural phenomenon?
To the genuine delight and surprise, of both students and instrucotrs at Kwan Moo Do Playa, when they entered the studio on Sunday, not only was the roof still there, but none of the windows were broken! Of course there were copious amounts of water everywhere, but besides some small repairs that were needed, the studio survived relatively unscathed. Knowing what this huge hurricane had done to other areas in the Riviera Maya, owner and master, Miguel Gallardo felt very blessed to still have this beautiful space that teaches so many people the positive things in life.
And there are more good times to look forward to as well; next Monday, November 14th they have Tae Kwon Do exams for adults and children, administered by a Tae Kwon Do master coming from Mexico City. The week after that, one of their Tae Kwon Do students is going to Mexico City for his black belt exam. December has some exciting things happening as well, the first Hapkido exam in Playa del Carmen will take place at Kwan Moo Do Playa. A Grand Master will be coming all the way from Korea to administer the exams. Also in December some of the instructors will be taking Aikido seminars and attend the annual Gishi Sai Samurai festival in Tokyo, Japan. Yes, Hurricane Wilma caused an incredible amount of damage, both emotional and material, but Quintana Roo is going strong, together we are rebuilding everything! In the middle of this solidarity it’s precisely that positive attitude that makes us stronger than ever. Kwan Moo Do Playa welcomes you to get to know your school, where they maintain a true Martial Arts philosophy and a place to learn and grow in many ways. After two days of non- stop clean up, they were able to reinstall the Tatami, a special Martial Arts floor shipped from Korea. They had the place ready to receive students onOctober 24th only 3 days after Hurricane Wilma had made landfall! The students and instructors were ecstatic to return to their beloved studio. In the aftermath of the storm life was chaotic and stressful while many people were still without electricity, hot meals were scarce, and many families lost both their houses and their livelihood. Returning to familiar routines and customs were welcome and comforting, and the students thrived as the studio came back to life.
