AMBER MEANS GO Yes it is the time for Amber Jacks to run here on the Quintana Roo Coast. These fish provide some excellent rod bending sport fishing action. I have seen some nice fish come in at Playa del Carmen. The local Mexican captains are offering trips from the beach in their traditional Mexican boats which you will find moored along the shore line. These boats are excellent to fish from as the beaches are very shallow in Playa Del Carmen so the larger boats have problems coming ashore. I like the Amber Jack fish because it is drift fishing which makes a change from trolling. You need to catch some live bait .......................
Once you have your bait it will be time to set off to the deeper waters approx 200 meters or deeper (not that far from the shore roughly about 3/4 of a mile) where you will find a brilliant hot spot that I know of. There are two yellow buoys marking the electric cables that cross to Cozumel this is where I suggest you start your drift. I have been there with six live fish for bait and have caught six Amber Jacks within a couple of hours so you can’t get much better fishing than that. This picture is of one of the Amber Jacks I caught there I’m sure you will agree it is quite impressive fishing. As for all you shore anglers I hope you have been having a good time because I have caught a nice Horse Eyed Jack on a rapala silver this month . The weight was 17lbs, I was using a light spinning 2lb test curve rod and 15lb test line. This beast took me 35 minutes to capture! Absolutely heart stopping action! Also I caught a Snook at 6.5lbs and lost a Tarpon at least 50lb on a live mullet. I was heart broken when the hook came out of the tarpon but I will try again soon to catch one. All these fish were caught at Puerto Aventuras. I have found it very difficult to buy fishing equipment in Playa del Carmen or anywhere for that matter but that will not be the case for much longer there is a new shop opening on the 10th Avenue between streets 14 and 16, called Caribbean Fishing yes you have guessed it is mine and it opens in December so I hope to see you all there. which you can catch in the shallow water just off the beach using sardines and a small hook approx size 10. The top line bait is the pin fish and some of the grunt fish family. If you struggle to catch any live bait don’t worry as I have seen Amber Jacks caught on bunches of sardines, you need a large circle hook approx size 014 to keep your live bait on the hook.
