Upscale dining in a laid back atmosphere.

Paul Brans, originally from Canada, moved here to Playa del Carmen a little over a year ago, from London, England, where he had lived for the past 20 years. Paul first came to Playa del Carmen, on a fluke, and like so many of us fell in love with the area. He was on his way to Venezuela with a group of friends for a South American holiday, when a civil war broke out, and a friend recommended Playa del Carmen instead. So he traded in dreary London weather, for warm Caribbean nights, and loves the change......

Fresh bread, olvie oil, and balsamic He owned and operated restaurants in London’s, Regent's Park, for over 4 years, and has years of experience in running nightclubs, and private members clubs in London as well. He knew he wanted to open restaurants when he arrived, and he hit the ground running to find the proper location to create his vision.

He knew that there was no other existing Playa del Carmen restaurants doing what he wanted to do. Paul wanted to create a relaxing, and comfortable environment that was inviting, and not stuffy. Zocalo means a town square, or community meeting place, a place to gather, meet and socialize. One Friday afternoon he walked into Body Works, a gym that had been here for years, and amazingly enough he pictured the image he wanted to create.

Diego Rivera muralHe has now created an incredible space that is European inspired, but at the same time, it is celebrating the beauty of the Mexican Caribbean, and all that the area has to offer. Everything, from chandeliers to the beautiful bathroom sinks, is self designed by Paul, and created by local craftsmen and artisans. He has trained his staff, of 25, meticulously, and they all strive to give high quality, service without being stuffy. He has created a newly inspired space and atmosphere like no other restaurants in our area.

Zocalo opened its doors just this past April and has become a popular place among locals and visitors alike. Paul has found an unfilled niche in the competitive market here for Playa del Carmen restaurants. He has hosted many private events such as wedding receptions, birthday parties, and other notable special events. In addition he has a regular clientele who has come to love his amazing culinary creations.

He has recently added Sunday night roast dinners; a set menu each Sunday with a 3 course White chocolate cheesecake with vodkafeast that will make your taste buds dance with delight. Start out with the mushroom cream soup, an amazing combination of Portobello, Shitake, and Button mushrooms blended until creamy and smooth. Then move onto the entrée, roasted sirloin, served medium rare, with Yorkshire pudding, fresh crisp vegetables, potatoes, and of course tangy horseradish, which creates a perfect mouthwatering dish. Finally you can choose from the dessert menu, of orange crème brulee, chocolate torte, or white chocolate cheesecake with vodka and strawberries, all of which are pure heaven, to the chocolate or sweet lover. This is truly one of the Playa del Carmen restaurants you must visit.

Sunday roast dinners are every Sunday from 4:00 PM until 11:00 PM, and each Sunday the menu offers a different experience with a rotating menu, and all of this for 175.00 pesos per person, you won’t be disappointed! In addition Paul is hosting a Thanksgiving buffet on Thursday November 24th, for 185.00 pesos per person.

For more information, or to make a reservation, call 984- 879-4797. Zocalo is located on 8th Street between 5th and 10th Avenue, Playa del Carmen. They are open 11:00 AM until midnight, Monday through Saturday, and Sunday Dinner is served 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
