The Frugal Gourmet - Xlapak

Bargain Lunch Anyone? A Frugal Gourmet Must!

Xlapak” (meaning Old Wall in Mayan) is probably better known as “The Smoothie Place on 5th. The sign says: “The Best in Town” and this is not a lie! The smoothies are a plus. Check out the extensive menu and choose one!

It gets better! Xlapak also offers a LUNCH SPECIAL at a mere $49 Pesos! It is served until 4:00 PM. This can make an early dinner for some. The lunch not only looks good, it tastes great!

Appetizers are either chicken soup or fried rice; there is a choice of 4 entrees, and drinks of chaya or freshly made lemonade. Did I forget to mention the corn chips, salsa, & tortillas?

Anyone of the appetizers will satisfy you! I prefer the fried rice more than the chicken soup.

My favorite Entrée “Pollo con Mole” comes beautifully presented, it is made of tender bits of chicken covered by a Mole sauce, accented with cream, and accompanied by rice. The “Mole” is just spicy enough! And the flavor is as exquisite as the presentation.

The “Chaya” drink made of Chaya leaves (a plant from the Yucatan peninsula) is mixed with fresh orange juice and served in a tall glass. The foamy green mixture looks weird; but sure tastes great and surely quenches your thirst.

This quaint restaurant is owned by Martin; a tall, proud Swede who surrounds himself with a friendly Mexican staff. When you are there ask him to tell you about his encounter with the “Deadly Swedish Spider”.

They also have their own language school and internet café on the premises.

Xlapak is located on 5th Ave - North of 12th Street. Martin or Jorge will be there to welcome you. Buen Provecho!
