Description
The Frugal Gourmet: Il Baretto - Paradise Fresh from the Mediterranean - A Playa del Carmen Delight! Perfect! Upscale! Amore! IL BARETTO has the perfect location, in the upscale part of 5th Ave, at the corner of calle 26 in Playa del Carmen - where most of the Italian crowd gathers. IL BARETTO is the number one meeting place with its unbeatable ambience due to Barbara’s charismatic presence, and the consistency of its food quality. Her partner Clo and the attentive and friendly staff make you feel at home, and they even know how you like your Cappuccino.! If you care to snack on a Panini, or a Bruschetta or feast on a "Ravioli Quatro Fromagii" IL BARETTO is the place! The uniqueness of its PASTA menu enables the frugal gourmet to be able to choose between different pastas and sauces at a penny-wise 55 pesos! A rarity in town!
Many choices for our frugal purse like excellent salads, no skimping here either! Crisp Romaine, green and red leaf lettuces, fresh veggies and Arugula will be served! IL BARETTO has the best price for beer and expresso (not entered in the best coffee in town contest, it would have been a sure winner!) For the sweet tooth and the chocolate freak, is “Hot chocolate” Italian Style: sensuously creamy, perfectly flavored to be savored by “the spoon” only. A Dream! Hot chocolate? Yes! Our Frugal Gourmet cannot resist it, even in 105 o weather! What makes IL BARETTO so popular is the owner’s presence at all times, a definite plus in the success of the place. Long gone is the time when businesses ran by themselves! Hard work is what keeps you ahead of your competition. “”Buon Appetito” at IL BARETTO

OK! Don't laugh ...Joe is an Italo-American - a descendant of superb chefs. He honed his taste buds at an early age. So, yes Joe knows Pasta! Born and raised in New Jersey, in view of the Manhattan skyline, Joe is a perfect shopper and is always looking for that "special" Deal! The guy dined in some of the finest restaurants from New York to Hong Kong via Paris and Milano.

My boyfriend and I just recently visited Playa and were doubly lucky to find a wonderful hotel(Luna Blue) next to a wonderful restaurant (Il Baretto.) The food was amazing, inexpensive and authentically Italian and the service was friendly. I haven't had such fresh Italian dishes since I lived in Italy! With the charming and friendly atmosphere, we literally ate there every day.

by Joe Bevacqua,
You will have to decide between Fusilli, Rigatoni Penne or Spaghetti (No way Jose will an Italo-American be caught eating Spaghetti!) and any of six varied and delicious sauces. I recommend the Boscaiola a rich cream and mushroom sauce, which arrives on your plate Al Dente and melts in your mouth. None of the portions are skimpy.
