Papa Loco Restaurant Playa del CarmenDr. Taco Adds Third Restaurant to His Taco Empire.

Dr. Taco has certainly made a name for himself in our community. Dr. Taco, aka Carlo from Guadalajara is an MD who got burnt out on his life in the city and moved his family here to Playa del Carmen 4 years ago. He opened his first location on 10th Avenue between 8th and 10th Streets and it was an immediate hit. With inexpensive prices, cold beers, the best salsa bar in the world, and great fish tacos, it was no wonder that his business exploded. He opened a second location on the road down to Mamitas to cater to the beach crowd, and 2 months ago he opened Papa Loco.

Although there are tacos at Papa Loco the main focus are potatoes, and queso fundidos. Quesos Fundidos (priced between $30 and $40 pesos) are melted cheese topped with your choice of aracherra, shrimp, or vegetables or a mixture thereof. It is served hot and melted from the oven to eat with either bread or chips. The Papas Locos (between $40 and $50 pesos) are served mashed topped with your choice Papa Loco Restaurant Playa del Carmen Mexicoof arrachera, chicken, pork, chorizo, ham, beef, or veggies, and then smothered in cheese and popped in the oven (very low calorie and carb free!). The taco menu is different from his other locations in that there are no seafood tacos; arrachera, beef, chicken, pork, and chorizo make up the taco menu and are between 12.00 and 14.00 pesos per taco.

We recently went with a group of 9 people, and when we arrived we had the place to ourselves. Service was a bit slow for only having a total of 2 tables that were occupied, but I know the waiter from the original Dr. Taco so maybe he was just having an off night. Web Guy and I shared an order of the Papas Locos with the arrachera, and it was PLENTY for two people. The only complaint I had was that it was not hot enough so once that was remedied I inhaled my half. Web Guy enjoyed a chorizo taco; and one end of the table ordered the chorizo fundido and raved about it. They have yet to receive their liquor license, but serve fresh and tangy jamaica by the liter as well as water, tamarindo, and horchata. Papa Loco Restaurant Playa del Carmen MexicoFresh chips, pickled onions, salsa Mexicana, creamy habanero salsa, and a warm blended salsa all were plentiful and refilled when necessary. The only complaint the table had was that most of the Papas Locos were served warm, not hot, and I was the only one who sent mine back and really got to enjoy it. I would absolutely return, or stop by to take something home, I just think they need to iron out a few kinks like any new business, and you certainly can't beat the price!
