La Cueva del Pescador in Akumal
Ceviche, you want the best ceviche? Well, you have to travel a few kilometers for it, but it is well worth the trip. Take it from this very sensitive stomached Gringa. This is also coming from a New York Gringa, so I hope you know this expression …. “It’s to die for.”
I have been visiting Akumal for years to enjoy the meals at La Cueva del Pescador. I’m super picky about the seafood I eat and how it is prepared and I had not yet come across a restaurant that has consistently produced great dishes; until La Cueva del Pescador.........
They’ve got shrimp, conch, octopus, fish, and probably more in the way of ceviche. Ok, so you don’t like the `raw stuff’, well they’ve got really great hot foods too. Do you have a hankerin’ for some mini lobsters (Langoustines)? The best style is broiled, oh la la, what great taste! How about boiled crabs? They brought a dish of crab legs to the table that made my eyes water with delight. What about some Snapper Veracruz style? Wow, what great fish dishes!
Don’t forget to also try their soups. A bowl of fish soup is enough for a whole meal, well at least for me. So, I share it to keep room for all the other goodies.
The prices are very, very reasonable. Just ask for the food, prepared how you like it and voila… you’re savoring every bite, without even realizing it. The setting is very casual as it has tree trunk tables and a sandy floor. It is laid back and cozy; wear your sandals.
They also have really great drinks. The lemonade is the best around. It is so refreshing on those really hot humid days/evenings.
Ok, how do you find this place? Well, here we go - this Gringa doesn’t know names of streets – like that would help anyway – since I never see street signs anywhere.
Take the highway south to Tulum and get off at the first Akumal exit. Go east and take it to the end, toward the beach. Be careful of the speed bumps!! (Ouch) Go through the quaint little rock wall entrance, and follow the road to the left. You’ll see a small sign on the right with an arrow pointing left with `La Cueva Del Pescador’ on it. The parking area is on your left.
Once there, ask for Ali, and tell him that Susie from New York sent you. He’s very cute and will be more than happy to satisfy your every culinary desire.
Buen Provecho!
