Description
Hole in the Wall Deli and Bar opens in Playa del Carmen. Three years ago Karen Lange, long time Playa del Carmen resident, opened a deli, a real deli with pickles, pasta salads, potato salads, bagels, and killer sandwiches, down in Puerto Aventuras. Web Guy and I would make a special trip down to Puerto Aventuras just to get our Reuben or Italian sandwich fix. Occasionally we would even phone Karen to see when she was coming north so we could get a "home delivery" Unfortunately she was forced to close down less then a year after opening her doors. To say the least we were not only sad for her, but what about the food?
She had always planned and dreamed of opening another deli, but rather then Puerto Aventuras, she was focused on finding a good locale here in Playa del Carmen. After a series of hurdles she finally found the right spot, right partner, and right fit, and Hole in the Wall Deli opened in October of 2007. Karen and her partner, Greco Witteveen, wanted to create a cozy, casual neighborhood bar with great food, and they have done just that! With Karen's background being from the East Coast of the United States, and Greco from Holland, they have made a unique spot that is welcoming and laid-back, but at the same time accompanied by great service and high quality food and drink. Karen's first job was in a deli in New Jersey, and she has been in the food and bar industry for years, so it was a natural progression to own a place of her own, and Greco brings an extraordinary resume to the table as well. Originally from a small town in Holland, Greco has been in Playa del Carmen 16 years, yes 16 years! With a background in advertising he was sick and tired of the rat race in Holland, not to mention the climate, so in 1991 he sold everything and came to Playa del Carmen in search of a more laid back lifestyle. His first job was being the bar manger at Blue Parrot, and then he proceeded to be involved in quite a few famous landmarks such as; the Beer Bucket, the Beach Bucket, Tequila Barrel, Buenos Aires and Bourbon Street. Needless to say he has the bar business in Playa del Carmen down pat! In 2003 he was in a major car accident and suffered some pretty devastating injuries prompting him to sell everything and take a long break to re-evaluate. Finally he was ready to return to business life and dallied in a few other business options in Playa del Carmen. When the opportunity came to open up Hole in the Wall, being long time friends, both Karen and Greco jumped at the chance. The end result is a homey deli and bar with both European and East Coast influences that seem to be just the right mix. You will often see Karen buzzing around the kitchen, or Greco practicing his famous DJ skills with great tunes spilling out into the street, either way you shake it, it is a must try while in Playa del Carmen. So come on by and check out the Hole in the Wall Deli for the ideal Reuben, a monster chef salad, or their perfect potato salad. Or sample something from their breakfast menu; from the flying skillet to the rich and delicious eggs Benedict you will leave happy and satiated. Grab an espresso to go, or try a specialty cocktail from their "Rehab" menu, and with their reasonable prices, and great flavors, we are sure you will not be disappointed! They are currently open from 8:00 AM until 2:00 AM Monday through Saturday (will be daily starting in Decmeber), and are working on a late night menu as well. They are centrally located on 1st Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets in the heart of Playa del Carmen. Call 984-137-5009 for more information or to order something to go. Comments (0)
