Hola Asia in Puerto Morelos is a real treat for the Asian
food lover.
Although Hola Asia is entering its sixth season in Puerto
Morelos, and I have enjoyed dining there many times, I finally remembered my
pen and paper the last time we visited.
Every once in awhile a small group of us like to head up to Puerto
Morelos and say hi to Rob and Joanne at the Alma Libre Bookstore, buy a book or
two, and eat at Hola Asia. Hola Asia has
a variety of delicious dishes from Chinese, Japanese, and Thai recipes that use
fresh ingredients, crisp vegetables, and choice meats. They have an eclectic, varying menu, and will certainly have something for everyone.
They are sure to be a hit if you are looking for an Asian
food experience with choices ranging from sushi, to vegetarian stir fries, to
Thai noodle dishes. Beers are only 20.00 pesos and come perfectly chilled to
your table, and their Cuba Libre for 35.00 pesos packs just the right punch for
those of you who enjoy rum.
When we went up a couple of weeks ago to get our book and
food fix we decided on ordering a couple of appetizers for the table to nibble
on while we enjoyed our drinks and perused the menu. We picked the Fried Pork Wontons
(60.00 pesos), and the Zesty Pot Stickers (60.00 pesos), which both come 6 to
an order, and once we tasted them we were tempted to order 6 more orders and
nothing more. The Fried Pork Wontons
came with a zesty dipping sauce of soy, chili oil, cilantro, sesame and lime,
and were absolutely out of this world. The Zesty Pot Stickers were accompanied
by a sweet peach dipping sauce that balanced out the heat of the pot stickers
perfectly.
Once we inhaled our appetizers we ordered our entrée, refraining
from sticking solely to the starter menu. Web Guy went for his favorite, General
Tso's Chicken (70.00 pesos), and it came with steamed rice and perfectly done
chicken that two people could have easily shared. One of our friends ordered
the Mixed Lo Mein (80.00 pesos) which was an ample serving with plenty of
chicken, beef, and pork. However, instead of lo mein noodles, it was served
with chow mein noodles. We are not sure if this was a mistake or if they were
simply out of lo mein and didn't let us know. Either way, not a big deal,
because it was still delicious. I ordered my all time favorite, Chicken Phad
Thai (70.00), as did our other friend at the table. We both agreed it was a bit
on the sweet side, but once we squeezed a bit of lime on it we were both happy
as clams and cleaned our plates.
The server was a bit on the surly side and
didn't seem to want to be there, but the service was adequate just the same.
Valerie, a server/manager who has been there for the past 6 years is the real
treat you get when you walk in the door. She always gives us hugs and smiles
and makes us feel right at home. So if possible, request to sit in her section!
