Description
We now have our very own George and Dragon Pub right here in Playa del Carmen. This past Saturday was their grand opening and it was a definite success. As the legend goes Saint George, a patron saint of England, is the symbol to the Catholic Faith as a saint and a fighter. Saint George was actually a Roman Calvary officer and a Christian. He, attempting to rid the world from evil, decided to slay the dragon that was tormenting the area around Cappadocia. The local townsfolk, not knowing any other way to get rid of a dragon, fed it sacrifices of their best sheep. Sadly, this only appeased the dragon for a short time, and it attacked again. Saint George happened to come into town when they were sacrificing their young virgin princess. With that, he slew the mighty dragon and saved the princess. Saint George is a symbol for many things. His honor and valiantly displayed on the battle field, and before the dragon, obviously make him important. To the Catholics, though, he is a Saint with a legend. Zenon Rybicki is originally from Manchester England and has been in the area for the past 2 years. With more then 400,000 Brits visiting the area annually he saw an opportunity he couldn’t resist and opened up a British style pub on 5th Avenue. But of course you don’t need a British passport to go enjoy a pint and a snack. On Saturday there were a great mix of people from all parts of the globe to raise their glass and toast to Zenon and his new found success. The projection television has to be the largest in Playa del Carmen, and he will be hosting all types of sporting events and with beers only 15 pesos during the day and 20 pesos after 7:00 PM, you can’t beat it. So come on down to George and Dragon to enjoy an all day English Breakfast (bacon, sausage, mushrooms, beans, eggs, and rye bread), or to watch the telly and have a pint. George and Dragon is located on 5th Avenue between 20th and 22nd Streets, and is open daily from 10:00 AM until 2:00 AM Click for larger images.

In England the name George and Dragon is often used as names for pubs, inns, and the like to reflect the history of their long time legendary hero.
