Cost of Living in Playa del Carmen Update from One Stop Real Estate- Playa del Carmen, June 2008

Hello Everyone,

It’s been quite some time since I have had the time to write an article and give you an update on Playa del Carmen. So here goes, ready or not, sit down with a coffee! One Stop Real Estate was recently invited to represent the Riviera Maya at an International Living Conference in Cancun. After four days of collecting information about living in many different parts of the world; I was still thrilled that I chose to move to Mexico. In addition, Mexico is currently rated #1 for a retirement destination.

There are many reasons that I feel the way I do about Mexico, from the cost of living, to the proximity and ease of getting back to visit friends and family; Mexico has a lot to offer!

Let’s look at every day cost of living first. I am currently planning my summer vacation to Canada.  This is where I began to really see the difference in the cost of living. We are a family of four, and with a car rental and hotel for only 5 nights of our stay, it will cost an estimated $11,000.00 USD! Of course that is not the best comparison to actual cost of living so let’s take a look at these comparisons.

In Canada I will be paying about $5.81 USD per gallon of gas, and here in Playa del Carmen I pay about $3.15 USD per gallon. My property tax is .25% (Yes, POINT 25 PERCENT!) of the city assessed value of my house sitting on two corner lots. I pay less than $200.00 USD per year in property taxes! Our gardener comes and makes our garden look like a small resort for only $25.00 USD per visit. Our maid, who is like part of the family, comes twice a week and helps keep our home perfect, for only $20.00 USD a visit. The produce truck will deliver water, watermelon, oranges, cantaloupe, and of course mangos, directly to our gate as he passes through the neighborhood; $10.00 pesos or $1.00 USD for a bag of fresh mangos!

When you are ready to light up the BBQ, just stop by and pick up some freshly cut T-bone steaks for less than $4.00 USD each. If you prefer to eat out, you can have some fish or pastor tacos, and a beer for less than $10.00 USD per person. Or if you choose to be on the beach, put your feet in the sand under the palm trees, and look at the Caribbean Ocean, you can have a whole fresh fish prepared for you for less than $10.00 USD. What if you want to go diving? A two-tank dive in one of the world’s top diving destinations will cost you only $70.00 USD.  When you are ready to enjoy our hopping nightlife pay a $5.00 dollar cover charge, which will include your first two beers, and dance the night away at one of the top hot spots in town; the Blue Parrot.  Remember that the beach and the sun are both free, and it is a great life style!

What if you want to go visit your family?

We were originally thinking of moving from Canada to Thailand. But when we really got down to the nuts and bolts of it, being that far from our family didn’t make sense. The majority of our friends and family wouldn’t come and visit us that far away. Plus every time we would to go back for a visit it would be a major under taking. Now, from Mexico, we can be in one of several US or Canadian destinations within hours.  In addition, many of our friends and family already travel to Mexico so to get them to come to Playa del Carmen does not take very much convincing.

I am sure if you are planning to retire, or buy a vacation home, you will find you have many of the same reasons we have to choose Mexico. Here in Playa del Carmen you can still buy some beautiful places for your family to enjoy at a terrific value; just take a look at these.....

  • A townhouse in a gated community-$275,000.00 USD
  • A pool side condominium- $150,000.00 USD
  • Some additional options close to the beach starting from $279,000.00 USD-

It’s hard to get prices like these in any major city in the world, let alone a town like Playa del Carmen on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. If you have been waiting for the right time,……the time is now, don’t wait! Come join us here in beautiful Playa del Carmen!
