Chichen Itza; Seven Wonders of the World

By Shawn Bandick

An update from One Stop Real Esate in Playa del Carmen.

Hello Everyone,

In this article I would like to discuss Playa del Carmen's evolving relationship with Cancun, the new 7 Wonders of the World, and some happy ending news. Ten years ago Cancun was flourishing. They were the big dog on the block. At the same time the Riviera Maya was just starting to be discovered....

The towns and businesses of the Riviera Maya approached the Cancun Chamber of Commerce with a plan to broaden the tourist promotion for the area and include Playa del Carmen and the rest of the Riviera Maya. The plan was to allow for more balanced growth and a more diversified experience for the ever growing number of visitors to our area.

What do you think Cancun's response was? Well to put it simply, they were not interested. Cancun was booming so why change what is already working, and working well. As we all know that was short range thinking, and times have changed.

Now ten years later, the Riviera Maya is the major draw to the area. Don't get me wrong. Cancun has plenty of activity with great hotels and plenty to see and do, but Playa del Carmen and south, is where the playground starts, and rest assured our visitors know it. Look at the number of busses coming from Cancun to Playa del Carmen daily, and this will prove the point beyond a shadow of a doubt. Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya are now stronger draws for tourism than Cancun. In fact the draw to our area is what has kept Cancun's economy strong.

Here's another point that is going to drive even more tourism to our area. July 7th, 2007 the new Seven Wonders of the World were announced, and Chichen Itza was named. This will mean an even higher level of awareness of our area which in turn brings more visitors.

And to end on a good note; here's a good news story you should all know about. Two months ago a young traveler was announced missing after she attended a party in Tulum. You may have heard about her on the news, or you may have seen several bill boards between Playa del Carmen and Cancun showing her picture and announcing a reward for any information which would lead to her safe return. The state police were searching for information, and posters were plastered all over town. All of this only to find out that she had decided to go on tour through Belize for a few weeks and over looked telling any friends or family where she was going. We are so happy to be able to share good news!

So what does all of this mean to you and me as we buy real estate investments in and around Playa del Carmen? This year sales have increased and we have already broken annual records over last year. The quality of the construction, and products on the market, are increasing, and we are seeing an increase in the number of visitors on the street as the summer high season kicks into full swing. All of this will equate to increased rentals for us on our vacation properties and greater equities as well. If you have been waiting for the right time to get into the market, don't wait too long, the timing is perfect.
