Fishing is an amazingly popular sport, and many people like to go out for a day of fishing while they are on vacation. It is relaxing, fun, and exhilarating when you get your first bite. Major sport fishing in Mexico has long been associated with the west coast of Mexico; in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, or Puerto Vallarta. However there is also some amazing fishing to be had on the tranquil waters of the Caribbean here in Playa del Carmen and the Rivera Maya. Barracuda, Blue Marlin, Jewfish, Dorado, and Tarpon all populate the warm waters here and can make for a great day of fishing! There are many commercial fishing boats and companies here, and we are sure that they are experienced and can offer you a great fishing adventure, but we personally know Edy Pena. He is an incredible man, and let me tell you, he knows fish! Take it from one of his dear friends Jim Fry (aka Jaime Frito) who has given us a bit of history and back ground on Edy, his family, and his love of fishing......
His name is Edy Pena and he was bartending at The Chicago Connection that first day we were here 17 years ago. He left an impression on us when we first met, and it was over a year before we saw him again. He surprised us by remembering, not only our names, but where we were from as well. Soon after we saw him the second time he started working at Flippers, and by this point we were coming to Playa del Carmen for 2 weeks, then 3 weeks,, and then twice a year. As the years passed by, Edy married Mercedes, and then they had a daughter, Mayte, followed by their son, Jesus. Very early on in our friendship, I discovered Edy had a passion for fishing, just like me! His brothers are commercial fisherman in Progresso so he has been around fishing his whole life. So whenever we would arrive in Playa del Carmen, we would head to Flippers to drink some cervezas, people watch, visit with Edy, and we would ALWAYS talk about fishing. Then on one trip down to Playa del Carmen we headed to our established local hang out, and it was gone. All of those years ago we did not have the ease of communication that we now have available to us, and I did not have Edy's address. Where was my compadre?
He then proceeded to jump through all of the hoops, and follow the rules to start a legitimate business. It was also suggested to him that it would only add to his legitimacy and reputation if he joined the National Guard. And join he did, showing up every Saturday for one year to complete his commitment. He paid his fees for a license, made sure he had approval from the Coast Guard, applied for insurance, and he keeps up with his taxes. He is an honest, guy who is fun to be around, and makes me laugh, and as Jimmy Buffet says: "If we couldn't laugh we would go insane." All of these years later he still has a knack for remembering peoples name, where you are from, and everyone always feels safe with him, on his boat, or otherwise. So after 17 years, we are still the best of friends, he is like a son to me, and we have shared good times, and sad times. So the next time you are at the beach, look for the Mayte, in front of The Blue Parrot, and you will be glad that you did. My family and I just returned from our vacation in Mexico for 2 weeks. I have been vacationing in the Cancun/Playa del Carmen area fro many years now and have fished on quite a different boats in the area. I am writing this message about our experience with EDY fishing off Playa Del Carmen. It was very easy to book our trip as I brought my laptop from home and emailed SARAH back and forth to book 2 boats last minute with EDY and his crew. I made the simple small deposit and was told where to meet EDY on the beach. We arrived a little late, but EDY and his team was waiting for us and they were ready to go. My wife, my 12yr old daughter, my Father-in-law and I were lucky enough to get EDY and CHERRY on our boat. It was a little slow at first and I have to admit after seeing the other boat hook-up with a large MahiMahi I was not sure I got on the right boat. EDY rigged up a long line with many hooks and we started catching fish ( Spanish Mackerel, Trigger fish and Red Snapper). We then rigged up the outrigger and the down rigger for some more trolling. My daughter was getting anxious and wanted to head back because she was bored of waiting. So EDY said bring the lines in and just like that the downrigger snapped and on the line was a MahiMahi jumping out of the water. I fought the fish brought it to the boat and behind it was another MahiMahi, so EDY told me to leave the fish in the water and he put bait on another rod to try and catch the other one. It only a took a few minutes and EDY had the second one hooked up. My father-in law and I were both fighting these large MahiMahi together and what a Fight it was. We landed both fish and EDY, CHERRY and the rest of the boat was high fiving one another. I have to say we had lots of fun and EDY & CHERRY showed us a great time. Thanks again and Hope to fish with you again! If you decide to take a little fishing trip in Playa del Carmen Please look-up Fishing with EDY PENA you will not regret it!!!

Want to go fishing? Edy Pena will treat you like family, and oh yea, you will also catch a boatload of fish!
My wife and I have coming to Playa del Carmen for the past 17 years. We discovered it by chance, and by chance wandered into a bar on Fifth Avenue called The Chicago Connection. Many things have changed since then; all inclusives, big grocery stores, nice roads, but several things have not. The beautiful blue water is still beautiful and blue, the people are still happy and generous, and there is one young Mexican man who has become a special part of my family
Since I would always spend time at the beach, it did not take long before I found my friend, and he was working as the first mate on one of the fishing boats. We watched him for a good part of two weeks, working hard, getting customers, and cleaning fish that was brought in. All of this hard work, all for only 10 dollars per day! So I helped Edy out, and he was finally able to buy his own boat, and he named it the Mayte, after his daughter, who also happens to be crazy about fishing.
Trip includes: All fishing and safety equipment included (i.e.; fish finder, lures, poles line, life jackets, radio etc), 2 six packs of beer, 1 six pack of coca cola, and 6 bottles of water. The trip does not include food or snacks. You can either bring something of your own or we can arrange for food at an additional cost. The boat leaves at 7:00 AM and returns at approximately 11:00 AM. If there is a cancellation due to weather the trip can be rescheduled, and if you are unable to reschedule your deposit will be returned to you in full.

We fished with Edy on March 5th and had an unbelievably positive experience.
My father, wife, and I took my two sons and nephew out for two hours of fishing and the action was fantastic! As an experienced fisherman myself it was clear to me that Edy really knows what he is doing. More importantly, however, was the way he made our entire family feel and in particular the way he handled the kids. Each kid was able to not only catch fish but to feel important and be the center of attention. Not all guides have the gift to be good with fish AND people...Edy certainly does.
I sincerely appreciate your site getting us in touch with him!
Thanks!
