July 26th, 2008 began the Mayan New Year which is the Year of the Blue Electric Storm. This is a year to break old patterns that keep you from being all that you can and wish to be. As we prepare for 2012, this year pushes us to cleanse and renew our own electric nervous system. This is a year of major transformations for those of you who are seriously practicing any form of body /soul discipline like dance, meditation, art, music or yoga.
What is a carbon footprint and what can we do to reduce it?
These days there is
a growing concern for our climate and global warming. A term that keeps popping
up is “carbon footprint” so what does it actually mean? A carbon footprint
is the measure of the effect our activities have on the environment and climate
change, in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced by the fossil fuels
that are burned daily for everyday life. A carbon footprint is measured in units of carbon
dioxide.
FDA Extends Consumer Warning on Serrano Peppers from Mexico

FDA still telling consumers to stay away from Serrano Peppers; Is this possible in Playa del Carmen?
Laboratory testing by the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration has confirmed that both a sample of serrano pepper and
a sample of irrigation water collected by agency investigators on a farm in the
state of Tamaulipas, Mexico (business address is in Nuevo Leon,
Mexico) contain Salmonella
Saintpaul with the same genetic fingerprint as the strain of bacteria that is
causing the current outbreak in the United States. As a result, until further notice, the FDA is advising consumers to avoid raw
serrano peppers from Mexico, in addition to raw jalapeño peppers from Mexico,
and any foods that contain them.
When I moved here 4 years ago, I made a commitment to involving myself in the community as a way of giving thanks in some small way to Mexico for allowing me to live here. I have been fortunate enough to take part in fundraising events for the Bomberos, Angel Notion, and hurricane relief efforts in Majahual. Most recently, the charity that has been closest to my heart is the Peanut Pet Shelter, which was founded and is operated by my friends, Andy and Jen. The shelter functions solely on their own savings, fundraising events, and through donations from generous animal lovers.

Mayakoba Golf Classic Charitable Donations Top $300,000 USD
After First Two Years.
The 2008 Mayakoba Golf Classic, featuring the first PGA TOUR
victory of Brian Gay’s career, has donated $175,000 USD to various local,
national and international charities.
In its first two years, the Mayakoba Golf Classic has donated
more than $300,000 USD in an effort to give back to the community through
various philanthropic groups and to promote the game of golf within the Riviera
Maya and Cancún regions.
Ak Luum International School in Playa del Carmen Opens Their
Jungle Campus! Registration is now open for the 2008-2009 school year.
Ak Lu’um (Mayan for “Our Earth”) International School has
just finished up their second school year, and they are moving to their new,
and permanent, jungle campus for the 2008-2009 year.
Ak Lu’um International School is
a Waldorf based learning program , but also has an extensive global vision in
their teaching philosophy. In the 2 short years they have been open they have accomplished
and reached their goals beyond expectation. They closed out the 2007-2008
school year with 28 students, and with the opening of their new campus, they
will be able to accommodate up to 80 students while still keeping teacher to
student ratio low.
Recycling in Playa del Carmen- How are we doing in 2008?

Over
the past four years, I have seen the concept of recycling evolve from a
"silly notion" promoted only by a bunch of "gringos" to a full on
Cultural Revolution. Rarely a day goes by that I don't receive an email
from someone, Ex-pat or Mexican National, reminding me about a
recycling drive or a newly established drop-off area. When we arrived
here in 2004, the only "recycling" available to us was saving cans for
our babysitter, Lydia, to sell and turning in our cases of empty Sol and Dos Equis
bottles for fresh, cold, full ones. Many people, when they first move
here, are shocked and disgusted with the amount of waste and refuse
that can be found littering any unclaimed sliver of property.

In a time when the world is obsessed with the newest
technologies and the latest and greatest, it really is time to go “old school”.
We as human beings are consumers, consuming, ultimately our beautiful planet.
It is not too late to change our ways, and it seems that the 21st
century is really getting a grip on how to change for the better by using
natural alternative energy sources.
