3-legged-2010.jpgWhat, it's that time of the year ALREADY?! Many of you may recall that there is a Three Legged Bar Crawl that benefits the Riviera Maya's Bomberos (Firefighters) in Playa del Carmen.

Each year, teams enter this fun race and through their entries and your generous sponsorship raise money for much-needed equipment and training. This year will be the 9th Annual Training Academy. This weeklong training exercise is often the only training our firemen will get all year, so its importance cannot be overstated. Also our Fire Department is always in need of new equipment, and must raise money to purchase any equipment beyond the government provided bare minimum.

Friends of Ak Lu’um is a new organization, based out of Playa del Carmen,  that will be offering educational scholarships to Mexican Nationals that otherwise would not have an opportunity at a quality education.  Promoting holistic education, Friends of Ak Lu’um is working in cooperation with the Ak Lu'um International School, the first ecological school in the Yucatan, that follows a humanistic, Anthroposophical approach to education. Friends of Ak Lu’um are currently applying for non-profit status in the United States to open up further opportunities for fundraising in the United States, and they will be hosting their first fundraiser on February 20th, 2010; Amore! A night filled with fun, friends, and food……

Mayakoba Golf Classic- PGA 2010Los Bomberos to participate at the PGA Tour- Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen February 17th - 21st, 2010!

In Janaury I received a phone call from a Larson Segerdahl, Tournament Director of the Mayakoba Golf Classic; Mexico’s Only PGA TOUR Event.  He asked our Foundation, Bomberos de la Riviera Maya. A.C., to participate by providing Ambassadors (volunteers) on holes #1 and #12 at this year’s tournament.  Each year, the Mayakoba Golf Classic is supported by nearly 500 Ambassadors allowing the event to contribute significant funds to a wide variety of deserving charities and foundations.  To date the event has donated $700,000 USD which has a direct impact on the Playa del Carmen Community.

Yesterday afternoon, the beach in front of Wicky's Restaurant in Playa del Carmen was the place to be for great BBQ and live music! The fundraiser, "Hope for Haiti", benefiting, Doctors Without Borders, was hosted by Wicky's, attracting hundreds of local residents and visitors alike. Many came to enjoy the excellent buffet presented by Head Chef Collin Kelley, others came to enjoy the beach and the entertainment provided by J.J. and The Nasty Bastards Band, Chris Bolister, Brent Parkin, Mike Grabow, Barefoot Skinny and Gary with his Gringos Perdidos!

Owner,Daniel Ramirez Calderon, took over the location on the corner of 5th Avenue and Constituyentes in 2004 where Kick Ass Shrimp used to be, and it has become a popular favorite among visitors and locals visiting and living in Playa del Carmen. In 2005 they won the Best of the Best contest on Playa Maya News for the best local tacos Al Pastor, and they have been pleasing customers with their fresh salsas, delicious tacos, and cold beer ever since. Congratulations to Daniel and his wonderful staff for 6 successful years in Playa del Carmen!
