Our Rotary Club Community Center is ready this month! The Rotary Clubs hope and goal for the community center is to be able to offer adult education, computer classes, health care, and Artisan training just to name a few things. At this point they are looking for volunteers as well as equipment to get classes and participation off the ground...
Background on Rotary International They will be celebrating their hundredth year of world wide service on February 23, 2005. Their self proclaimed motto is “Service Above Self” and they have lived up to this in the actions they have taken to promote international understanding. They are major proponents of humanitarian efforts, educational programs and above all health care and awareness. Since 1985 they have helped immunize over 1 billion children world wide. They have taken on the changing needs of society and have recently started addressing pressing issues of environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger and children at risk.
Three years ago they started to raise money through raffles, flea markets, and casino nights to enable them to purchase land for our Playa Del Carmen Community Center. Their efforts paid off and along with donations and help from the Springfield Missouri and Winter Springs Florida Rotary Clubs the land was acquired. In February 2004 our local Rotary Club applied for a building grant through SEDESOL (Secretaria Deserollo Social) who manage the Mexican affiliate of Habitat for Humanity. Low and behold their request was granted and construction began in September 2004. Now it is almost complete and they are in need of more community support.
So please come join them in their efforts to better our community! On December 4th and 5th The Golf Club at Playacar is sponsoring and hosting a fund raising golf tournament. Our local chapter has been actively supporting Rotary International for the past 13 years, but has recently set their sites closer to home. Their first goal: was to build a community center in El Ejido.
The Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen currently has 19 members in the Playa del Carmen chapter of the Rotary and in addition to the community center, Playa del Carmen Rotary Club is supporting fundraising efforts for a small educational program in El Colosio as well as the government funded clinic in El Colsio.
