No Beer Super Bowl Sunday?

Ley Seca or Dry Law may be in affect  on February 6th  2005!

For the past 70 years Mexico has prohibited the sale of alcohol up to 48 hours prior and 24 hours after a major election. On February 6th, 2005 there are elections to be held for the Mayor (Presidente Municipal) and it is a national election. Usually this is not that major of an issue, but this year’s election’s falls on both, Super Bowl Sunday and Carnaval. Although Super Bowl Sunday cannot be changed, Cozumel has chosen to change its carnival celebration to the following week.

The Cozumel Carnaval Committee has finalized the dates for Carnaval 2005. A logistical issue arises in 2005 since, by law, local elections for Presidente Municipal must be held on February 6, 2005. This very important date falls during the traditional religious calendar dates for "Fat Tuesday" & Ash Wednesday and as such would pose 1) problems for all city personnel having two important priorities occurring congruently and 2) an inconvenience to visitors since no liquor can be sold for the 1-2 days surrounding the election date.

Consequently, local officials have decided to move Cozumel Carnaval 2005 to the following week. They are in the process of notifying the general public, and all those in the tourism sector, to ensure those planning to visit Cozumel during Carnaval, will have the correct dates for the celebration. Carnaval  will be held February 9 - 16, 2005.

In Playa del Carmen the dry law will most likely be in affect during Super Bowl Sunday, but will not be officially announced until approximately 3 days prior to the elections. So a bit of advice to all of you football and beer fans, ,buy your beer in advance, and watch the game at a friend’s.

So stay tuned to Playa Maya News for the latest and greatest beer availability news and information!
