This just in from the frontlines in Playa del Carmen….. Hurricane Wilma came to Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya area with a vengeance last Thursday, but we have survived the worst, and the relief efforts are underway....
Both the Mexican government, military, and local authorities have responded so incredibly that we must recognize their amazing efforts. In Playa del Carmen most electricity has been restored, water is back on in many parts, and there is limited phone and internet access. Cozumel, Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres have been hit the hardest, and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, and Tulum were very lucky, and were relatively unscathed. It is anticipated that Playa del Carmens' tourist areas will be up and operational in just a few short weeks, just in time for the onslaught of high season. Already 5th Avenue looks incredibly “normal” and droves of people were out and about last night eating at Babes, watching the World Series at the Tequila Barrel, swapping stories at Java Joe’s, and in general having a great time. There is still a dry law in effect so no alcohol is available at local stores, but the businesses on or around 5th Avenue are serving to their clientele. More then anything, we are here, we have survived, we are well, and things will be okay. The Blue Parrot will be reopening the bar in a couple of days, and the Northern part of 5th Avenue is also opening today and tomorrow. Please be patient and we will continue to report the local progress and upload pictures to show visual progress as well. The pictures included in this post are from last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will post more recent photos as soon as we can.
