blue parrotExpats watched the U.S. Elections under the Big Palapa at the famous Blue Parrot

Mexicans intensely watched the northern neighbor

by JP the Writer

Expats gathered under the Big Palapa in the lounge area at the Blue Parrot. Hosts Tom Doody and Pam Robbins hoisted the biggest screen TV in Playa del Carmen so that the couch potatoes could gather to find out who would be the next President of the United States of America.

Yes, the beer was flowing, the popcorn popping, and the crowd was ready for the biggest election to hit the world stage in decades.

“I am for Kerry” said Joe Bevaqua, a local resident. “He’s the right man for the job”. “That’s right” said Allison, a lovely vocal local patron.

In fact, every time an electoral vote for Kerry went up the crowd cheered on. This reporter could find NO supporter of President George W. Bush anywhere near the free event. The crowed clearly was John Kerry based......................

Calle 4 - The Last Frontier PDF Print E-mail

Will the renovation of Playa’s streets ever end?

Yes, the end is near and none to soon for the Historic District of Playa, nestled between the ferry dock to Cozumel and Calle 8, where local Mayan shopkeepers are mixed among Playa’s massive silver shops, nightclubs and famous restaurants.

For those not in the know, this massive remodeling of the tourist zones streets and walkways began more than two years ago in the area now known as Little Italy, north of Constituyentes between 10th Avenue and the beach. It has inched its way down, all too slowly, finally reaching the final two streets, Calle 4 and Calle 2.

Inspired by the burying of Playa wires and bone brick paving of the streets, the historic zone businesses are getting into the swing as well. Calle 4 is under a hot revitalization project and is ready for the high season. What’s new there? .............

Hurricane update: No school again Tuesday PDF Print E-mail

beachHurricane Ivan update as of 8 p.m.

We still are not seeing much here. Some people are heard to say it has passed us but I see on weather maps it is still close enough to give us some pretty bad weather if it turns.

The wave action has not changed much and we have had some mild wind and occasional spurts of rain.

There was no school today for local kids and there will be no school tomorrow. Safety first. The kids don't seem to mind.

Basically the Riviera Maya waits at ready. It looks like Ivan will have missed us but we may not be totally in the clear yet.

We have been receiving reader updates………

What Hurricane? It's not here but we could still feel its force.

It is Monday morning now and so far so good for the residents of Playa. The waves are high but they are still driven from a substantial distance off shore with no wind attached at the moment. Hurricane Ivan still appears on track to go between the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba. Cuba is bracing for the worst of it...............

Yeah Right Britney in Playa? PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 June 2004

By Outstandin Inthestreet

Britney Spears and Aerosmith in Playa del Carmen? Six Flags building an amusement park? Neil Diamond moving to the Riviera Maya?

Rumors heard out standing in the street say that there is to be a Rock Festival on XMAS day here in Playa and that Britney Spears is headlining with special guests Aerosmith. Wow, I thought! This is some show and I need to confirm.

So, I contacted Playa’s leading citizen, Java Joe, and he said and I quote “did you see the Lakers, they were outgunned by the Pistons – and no way Kobe’s going to the Clippers, no way” unquote. So what does that mean?

Is Britney coming or what?

The Playa Muse Clausurado PDF Print E-mail

The Playa Muse - Bringing You a Bit of the Pulse of Playa with some of the most asked questions and revealing answers

Yikes, what is happening with Playa? Streets are torn up, store fronts have “Clausurado” pasted all over them – New drainage, underground telephone, electricity and cable and beautiful streets are being laid. What’s going on?

What’s happening to Playa – so many stores are “Clausurado”?

Relax, all. Playa is thriving. Those “Clausurado” are pasted all over town, on walls and store fronts, because City Hall is finally enforcing the Signage regulation! In this case, the offending signs may be too big, too large, or just not have required permit and license. Did the business owners know this was about to occur? Well, sort of, in Mexican minute sense, but they did know for years it was required to have a sign permit. No permit, big fine and an ugly, big “Clausurado” sign pasted on your front.
