Meet Hawthorne Flaherty- writer, sustainable developer, owner of IURO; construction project development, and management. ~ IURO, pronounced as it appears, ‘Iuro' is taken from Latin, meaning a verbal commitment or an oath. It is suggestive of a time gone by, when honor and integrity were paramount and a person's word was a steadfast commitment. ~ This is the ideology of IURO, and it is the brainchild of Hawthorne Flaherty. Hawthorne grew up in a construction family in Ohio, and was involved in the family business from the age of 12 years old. He broke away from following in his family's footsteps, and took off to study psychology and Spanish at a university in New México. His love of theater, writing, and the arts eventually landed him in Los Angeles to try and break into the "business", but almost immediately he went back to what he knew, and started working as a handyman. This developed into a job as a project manager for building private residences in Beverly Hills, The Pacific Palisades, and Hollywood. Eventually he wanted to try something more challenging and interesting, and in 2004 the opportunity arose when he was offered a job to oversee a project in Tulum. Hawthorne jumped at the chance and spent the next 4 years learning the "ins and outs" of development and project management in Mexico, which was vastly different from the United States. Instead of finding the process difficult, he found it invigorating and appealing, getting involved in all aspects of the project. He found that when complications came up he wasn't able to turn to an architect or engineer, but had to solve them on his own, and this stimulated him creatively, thriving on the new challenges. He currently works with a network of architects, engineers, and other building professionals and is able to pull together the perfect team for each individual project as there is not "one" team that is right for every venture. Hawthorne's passion for sustainable development is apparent in his latest development of a 200 Square Meter house that is completely unique and will maintain environmental integrity. He believes that this is a solution that has to happen; incorporating wind, solar, and water treatments that will not impact our local environments in a negative way. He claims that this is an easy sell to prospective buyers due to the fact that we have the perfect weather for it, as well as some great new local companies that offer alternative energy solutions. Hawthorne mentions Los Arboles in Tulum as a perfect example of a beautiful way to build, and he claims that, not only is it a green way to build, but the process can be fun and exciting too. Often it can be a daunting task to foreigners who want to build and develop their dream home, but Hawthorne can help interpret and translate the local aspects of building in a different country and culture. His company, IURO, can offer different levels of supervision from land purchase to initial design, and even help with the often complex permit process. Either way it is guaranteed that Hawthorne, with his vast knowledge of the area in terms of construction and development, will pull together the perfect team for any project. Instead of clients being frustrated and unhappy they can enjoy the process of their own projects from start to finish.
