Well Meet Playa’s Own Best Kept Secret "Chivo Azul"

There's no freakin' bullshit. It sticks its neck out and says it straight from the heart. Sure there's a lot of different music you can get off on but soulful blues is more than that.

It takes you somewhere else. It grabs you by the you know what and lifts you above the shite.” said a laudable patron at Siesta Fiesta Hotel this past Monday night as he was grooving on Chivo Azul, Playa’s local soul blues band.

Chivo Azul (Blue Goat) has been rockin Playa for over 4 years now. They play tremendous original tunes and belt out classic covers for tourists who dig B.B. King, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Billy Holiday etc………..with classic songs like Respect, The Thrill is Gone, Piece of My Heart, God Bless the Child, Ain’t Nobody’s Business…….and more, Chivo Azul gives Playa the right vibe……. Casual Sophistication is what we can call it.

Chivo Azul is driven by Alfonso “Poncho” Miranda on bass, his son Zoar Miranda on drums, Memo Duenas on guitar, and the catty soulful chops of lead singer Evelyn Rubio who also doubles as the band’s Sax section.

Rubio’s voice is living intensity of soul in the true sense of that greatly abused word - sweet, sour, kind, mean, generous, profane, lovable and impossible. But then again, that’s soul, that’s the blues, and that’s the jazz of it all.

Her rendition of "God Bless the Child" brings chills down your spine. She's got that thing. She jammed on "The Thrill is Gone" with the rythym section wailing away.

Right now the band is playing at various clubs here in town. They are traveling to Mexico City. Then they come back to play in Playa.
