Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2008Local couple enjoys the 5th Annual Jazz Festival in Playa del Carmen.

By Paula Liebe

Since my fiancée Honza, moved from Holland to Playa del Carmen a few months ago, we were able to enjoy the 5th Annual Riviera Maya Jazz Festival together. The program looked promising, and with our history of the famous Dutch North Sea Jazz Festival, which we both had visited for many years, we were in for a treat.

After teaching a late yoga class we finally arrived at Mamita's Beach and enjoyed the last deep rhythmic sounds of the ‘Beaujean Project', followed by our local pride and joy ‘Aguamala'. Honza was impressed with the magnitude of the stage and the lighting , and I was impressed by the technically and perfectly performed Jazz Rock sound. As soon as Honza had uttered the words that a sensual voice was missing to the clean sound, the lovely voice of Carolina Montes filled the stage and it felt as a much-needed vocal bomb had exploded. When ‘Hector Infanzon' followed in the steps of ‘Aguamala' Honza said: "Now this sounds as if the delicious aromas of a kitchen are reaching my nose..."

The second night was filled with more variety in Jazz Rock sounds. Iraida Noriega covered her part with her amazing and smoky voice that has filled my room ever since I bought her CD ‘Viaje de Mar' in 2003. Earl Klugh performed as never before with a mix of sounds similar to George Benson, Weather Report and Level 42. Yet, it took him up to the last song until his band showed us what a powerful sound they really had. David Sanborn ended the second night with his classic, but funky sound that only he can produce. He simply embodies the difference between good and great.

The last night we arrived relatively early. This time we came armed with a Mexican blanket and a small cooler with a few beers and some Tequila, but the beach was already packed with Jazz fans. Although strollers and beach chairs blocked our view, we placed ourselves between the well-humored crowds and listened to the Jazzy sounds of Luca Litteras' chromatic harmonica. But when Billy Cobham filled the stage with his band, true fireworks of Jazz Rock sounds covered the beach. While waiting for the last band Fourplay to thrill us with their sound, we realized that the 2008 Riviera Maya Jazz Festival not only knocked us over with the great sounds and performances, but put us in the mood for love!
