Ayari Torres; Tortuga in Playa del Carmen

Meet Ayari Gonzalez Torres; psychologist, artist, mother, and entrepreneur.

Ayari, meaning heart in the Pre-Hispanic language of Huichol, moved to Playa del Carmen from D.F. 4 years ago. Ayari, and her husband Ronnie, decided that they wanted a quieter less stressful environment to raise their then 1 year old son Nicholas, and Playa del Carmen was a perfect fit.

With a degree in psychology she came to Playa del Carmen and opened a school, KinderCare, in February 2003. A long time artist she combined working with small children in early childhood education and art; developing art therapy and an intuitive teaching style. By February 2006 she decided to close the doors of her education center and focus solely on her art and finishing her art degree as well as raising her son.

She currently has only months to go to complete her art degree through UNAM located in Mexico City, and has been living on her artwork for more then a year. When asked of her inspirations she says that she is moved by the natural, lush landscapes of the Riviera Maya focusing on the local flora and fauna, and she spends many an hour at her art studio near Puerto Aventuras covered in acrylics, oils, and pastel creating, learning, and painting.

Although she knows she has been blessed with the response to her artwork she still feels the pull of psychology stating that she is drawn to combining her parallel interests of teaching, art, and the inner workings of the heart and mind. This has become even more apparent as she has been fulfilling her social service requirement for her degree volunteering at a local senior citizen community center here in Playa del Carmen. So don't be suprised if you see her start up an art therapy program, or working at one the local schools, but whether painting, teaching, or offering her knowledge of psychology to the community there is no stopping this force of nature known as Ayari.
