Anthony Coronia

Anthony Caronia – Photographer

Anthony was born in Rome, Italy. However, that was not where he was destined to stay as he moved around the world living in 10 or 12 other countries. Then he came to Playa del Carmen. He has now lived in Playa del Carmen for 8 years and can’t seem to leave. Something inexplicable holds him here.

I met him for the first time last night at a showing of his photography held at Da Gabi, an intriguing and well known local restaurant. His photographs lined the walls and were displayed on easels, they were bold and different. Many were of people with the portrait artistically altered in imaginative ways and many were black and whites of people where it seemed as if their essence and the feel of the moment had been captured forever.

artHe also presented a slide show of various trips and themes he had captured on film. The focuses included Africa, Brazil, New York and even right here in Playa. Many were in black and white which made an interesting contrast in a world so full of color.

He has published one book of his photographs already. It is called Costiera Amalfitana in Italian which means The Amalfi Coast. It was printed in Italy by request of the people. The locals felt that as he took his black and white pictures of the town and the countryside he was capturing the very sole of the area – not just the pretty people and superficial part of it that so many others had.

Anthony’s second book is in the works. It will be based on the African – Cuban religion and the name he is considering right now is Afro-Cuba. His pictures have also graced many of the covers of La Quinta, a beautiful local magazine.

more artWhat does the future hold for Anthony? In the future possibly we will see a third book, this one on the production of coffee in Mexico. It will tie in nicely to his current life as he also sells local restaurants coffee he brings in from Chiapas. As well he will probably be doing more magazines and possibly calendars.

“The balance always has to be between art and commercial” Anthony tells us.

However, as we all know it is the art from the heart that makes life.

Anthony has a web site under construction it is www.anthonycaronia.com and you can reach him by e-mail at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .
