Brent Parkin: Blues man, guitar aficionado, and Playa del Carmen regular!
Brent Parkin has been coming down to visit Playa del Carmen, from his native Canada, for the past 7 years. Without fail he arrives for 2 to 3 months as he flees the cold winters of the great northern expanse of Winnipeg, Canada, and he blesses our community with some incredible musical talent.
NEWS FROM THE MOJO ZONE RECORDING STUDIO IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN.....
Well, it has been a year since our un-official opening, and we figured it was time to share what has been happening here in the Mojo Zone!.
After 5 luxurious months in Germany , Brad returned in November to see if we could extend our lease with our new landlord at the Tequila Barrel. Link proved to be very generous and gave us until April to find new digs, thereby avoiding the dreaded high season move. Thanks to Link and everyone at the Tequila Barrel for their continued support!!!

Jazz for Peace concert to Benefit Centro Ecológico Akumal
Don't forget this event is happening today!
Centro Ecológico Akumal (CEA) is pleased to announce that the New York based group Jazz for Peace will be holding a concert on December 29th in support of our conservation efforts in the Riviera Maya.
That's Right, Grady, our local bluesfolkrocker, is back on the streets playing music and roaming the jungle for inspiriations, crazed adventures, and the sounds of the playa.
Grady, a well traveled and experienced musician came to Playa del Carmen 5 years ago for a two week gig and never left. With influences best described as Louisana Cajun Country Blues, Grady’s played worldwide with the best musicians in his genre and ended up in Playa as a matter of happenstance and destiny.
Are you now, or have you ever, searched for other employment while being at your presentposition?
This was the question asked to me by the Personnel/Human Relations Director at my current job. I'd read the employee manual. I knew the rules and regulations. Regardless, my answer was an emphatic "Hell Yes!"
After the ugliest look on his face returned to just plain ugly-he laughed (knowing I was just joking), scooted closer and said "but seriously?" My response was the most serious he'd ever seen.
"And what may I asked is the type of employment you are seeking"
"To paint pretty pictures on the beach in a tropical location and scuba dive" I replied. And so the story begins ................
At Home with Michel Brown Ledan and Lourdes Ortiz Rubio

Mexico, France, Impressionism and Realism find True Love in Playa del Carmen!
I was invited to sit down with world renowned artist and teacher, Michel Brown Ledan, and his love and partner, artist and architect, Lourdes Ortiz Rubio. When I first arrived at their house I could feel the love permeate and the art radiate. This may sound sappy, but it is true. When you are in the company of these 2 incredibly talented people it is absolutely apparent how much they care for each other and how much they are living art, not just creating it.
Mamitas and Playa Tukan roll with the groovy jazz sounds of a Party gone Incandescent
It was something unpredictable and in the end it was right cause Playa del Carmen had the time of its life last night at Jazz Fest 2004.
Yes, Day 3 of Jazz Fest 2004 rumbled into Playa del Carmen last night and onto Mamitas and Playa Tukan Beach to the biggest crowds of the event. It was another turning point in the history of Playa del Carmen as it was clear that our little quaint beach town has graduated into a place where art, music, and the good life are flourishing.
That’s right, day 3 came on with a mixture of cool, class, and sophistication while doing so in the hippest of clothing, beach beauties, and the who’s who of it all...
I had the distinct pleasure to sit down with world traveler, and accomplished artist, Janine Kelleher. I did not want it to be a formal and constrained interview, but rather a conversation of viewpoints, experiences, outlooks, and artistic expression. Although I did have to ask some of those oh so predictable questions here is what I took away from our conversation......
Fernando is one of our best loved jazz musicians and he is now organizer of the 2nd Annual Latin Riviera Maya Jazz Festival. He is actually in charge of all musical productions with the Riviera Maya Tourism Board.
If you love the music, it will live in you; it becomes a part of you .
