The Mean Streets of Playa del CarmenIs there a Music Scene in Playa del Carmen?

A Hip Recording Studio, New Artist Hits the Mean Street, a Cannabis Song to stop Extradition of a Mom?  What!  Meet the Underground!

by Burleigh Sullivan

Among the tourist shops, hotels, cruise ships, and trinket shops, there is an underground scene that most people here in the Playa del Carmen know nothing about.

I know, I know……art makes no money and who wants to listen to indie music when you simply go into any major hotel and hear your favorite song from "Sweatin to the Oldies". I got that part!  So take a chill pill!

But seriously folks, there is a small but growing scene of mods, rockers, pop artists, and folksy transplants from places like Austin Texas, Las Vegas Nevada, New York City, Italy, Argentina, Europe, Canada, and more……did I mention Zimbabwe?  Yeah, we have one guy from there too……well thats what I heard anyway....

There is a great recording studio in town called MojoZone Studios who is pumping out new stuff all the time.  Run by madman Brad Ryan who is also part of the Blue Planet empire on 5th avenue.  It's located in the Elijido.  You can find it by going up Constituyentes passed the Careterra, make a right on the 3rd Steet, and stop where you see the Cotamundi under the big jungle tree!  Or you can go to their web site at http://www.mojozonestudio.com/

MarcyElleNow, have you heard about MarcyElle and her new song "Johnny Was a Boy".  Yeah, it was recorded at the Mojo Zone Studio and produced by famed hip hop engineer Jozef Scales.  Now, it's not hip hop but it is an awesome poppy song for young riot grrls.  Check it out at http://www.marcyelle.com/.  Hey cheapos, it's a free download!  Okay!

Oh, and Jozef Scales has some stuff out too.  He and this awesome singer named Gala have a new CD out.

Jozef Scales resume reads something like this - Graduated from the Audio/Video Institute in Los Angeles in 1992. Worked briefly as house engineer at The Whiskey on Sunset Blvd. before becoming an assistant engineer for Andrew McKenzie at EMI and Richard Perry`s Studio 55 (Decca Records U.S in early days) and engineer Mike Flicker (of famed Heart). In 1993, Jozef obtained a position as general manager and assistant engineer at The Bakery Recording Studio and proceeded to work with clients such as Warner Bros. , Disney, Mattel, IBM, L.A. Motown, Sony, MCA, with such artists as Van Dyke Parks and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boy`s, Homero and Angeles Petron, Raphael, Julie Andrews, Mel Torme, Henry and Monica Mancini, Natalie Cole, Herbie Hancock, John Pattitucci, Stanley Clark, Wallace Roney, and many more.  He has also worked with Tech 9ne, Little Rich, Misphit, Leviathan, Lejo, Pharmacy, and Rogue Dogs of the Hip Hop Genre.

Okay, and finally local writer, singer, and renaissance man who lives in the shadows of the greedy, Johnny Punish, has just put out a new song called Rene and the Drug Squad. Now this catchy tune was recorded in support of famed American Mom Rene Boje who is currently fighting extradition to the U.S. from Canada for watering medical marijuana in California.

You see Rene Boje is fighting a fast track extradition order from Canada to the US . The US federal authorities want to imprison her for a 10 year mandatory minimum to life sentence in a federal prison for medical marijuana charges stemming from a bust in California , where medical marijuana is legal.

Ren BojeToday, nearly ten years later, Boje is a pawn in the drug war rivalry between the United States and Canada.   Frankly, to this writer, it totally sucks and so check out Johnny Punish's song and dig into the Renee Boje thing because this fascist stuff has got to stop.  Well, that's just my opinion but then again I am only a person who believes Freedom is more than just having my phones tapped, my emails read, and and my life invaded by a government who has to protect me from my own freedom.  Um, sorry, for the digression!

Anyway, the point is, there is an artist community in Playa del Carmen and it is a voice that is in the shadows.  Will it come out and play?  Support Local Artists and bring these folks out from shadows and let's rock!

Got a new artist to promote, send all your info to me, Burleigh Sullivan and I will get the word out.  Oh, and don't forget to send a free t-shirt and a coupon to take my main sqeeze out to a Phat dinner!  Hey, this is Playa del Carmen and I want my cut of action!  Rock On!
