A master of the bass guitar as well as several other instruments, few musicians of any genre have as impressive list of achievements as Marcus Miller. His jazz credentials were firmly re-established when he won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2001. He also has produced Grammy award winning recordings for jazz saxophonist David Sanborn with whom he has enjoyed a partnership for many years.

And he contributed to the Luther Vandros Grammy award-winning R & B Song of the Year of 1991, The Power of Love. With more than 400 recordings to his name, Marcus Miller adds jazz luster to this year's edition of the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival.

George Benson

George Benson in Playa del Carmen

For forty years this legend of jazz, whose voice and mastery of the guitar have not diminished one iota in all that time, will be enjoying a homecoming of sorts at the Festival. His Grammy award-winning album, Breezin, was the first jazz recording to reach Number 1 on the pop charts.

In 1976 Benson won three Grammy awards and he has continued to do so by winning a Grammy in 2006 for his recording with great jazz singer, Al Jarreau, the first time the two had been in a recording studio together. During the past ten years, George Benson also has displayed a particular love for Latin music. His well-received 1998 album is called "Poquito Spanish - Poquito Funk" and in it he does his own composition, also an award-winning song, El Barrio. Several of the other members on the bill at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival 2007 have appeared or recorded with Benson at some point during his long career which will make this seem like Old Home Week for this great jazz star.

Sacbe and Luis Conte

Sacbe and Luis Conte in Playa del Carmen

This group, formed primarily by the three Toussaint brothers, Eugenio, Enrique and Fernando (who also has served as the Musical Producer of the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival since its inception) has been responsible for several important landmarks in the history of Mexican jazz. To begin with, Sacbe was the first jazz group to create its own record label in Mexico. It also was the first to integrate one of the early versions of the synthesizer in their arrangements. Both in Mexico and the United States they were a fixture on the jazz scene for more than 20 years and after a period during which they disbanded, have gotten together again several times in recent years, including performing as a group a couple of years ago at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival. Sacbe are true legends of jazz in this country.
