Marcus Miller
A master of the bass guitar as well as several other instruments, few
musicians of any genre have as impressive list of achievements as
Marcus Miller. His jazz credentials were firmly re-established when he
won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2001. He also has
produced Grammy award winning recordings for jazz saxophonist David
Sanborn with whom he has enjoyed a partnership for many years.
AguaMala
A favorite group in Playa del Carmen, formed by drummer, Fernando
Toussaint, Aguamala has begun to make its mark in the jazz circles of
those in the know. Already with one recording under their belt, they
are well on their way to producing their follow-up recording.
Location: Mamita's Beach,
Playa del Carmen
Tower of Power For more than 30 years this musical aggregation comprised primarily of horns have been the darlings of R&B, funk, rock, soul and jazz lovers the world over.
Formed by Detroit-born Emilio Castillo in Oakland, California where he had moved as a teenager, they have appeared in the most prestigious musical venues on this planet with stars such as Sly Stone and Credence Clearwater and have recorded with the likes of Elton John, Rod Stewart, Smokey Robinson and scores of others.. TOP recently was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Music Association, a well deserved tribute to this unique musical aggregation.
Los Dorados
This group of young, Mexican, jazz performers have taken the jazz scene
of this country by storm during the past years. Their novel approach to
the music is testimony to the jazz heritage they embody.
Location: Mamita's Beach,
Playa del Carmen George Benson
For forty years this legend of jazz, whose voice and mastery of the
guitar have not diminished one iota in all that time, will be enjoying
a homecoming of sorts at the Festival. His Grammy award-winning album,
Breezin, was the first jazz recording to reach Number 1 on the pop
charts.
Sacbe and Luis Conte
This group, formed primarily by the three Toussaint brothers, Eugenio, Enrique and Fernando (who also has served as the Musical Producer of the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival since its inception) has been responsible for several important landmarks in the history of Mexican jazz. To begin with, Sacbe was the first jazz group to create its own record label in Mexico. It also was the first to integrate one of the early versions of the synthesizer in their arrangements. Both in Mexico and the United States they were a fixture on the jazz scene for more than 20 years and after a period during which they disbanded, have gotten together again several times in recent years, including performing as a group a couple of years ago at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival. Sacbe are true legends of jazz in this country.
