playa del carmen bar and night club jam session

A great live music venue in Playa del Carmen, The Jam Session,  is creating a hot spot for local and visiting musicians.

Two years ago, after many years in the music industry, first as a singer-musician in Mexico and Europe, then as Head of Record Production at CBS and RCA in Mexico City, and ten years as Vice-President at The Walt Disney Records and Publishing Company - Latin America Division, in Miami and L.A., Renato López realized that he’d had enough of the glitz and glamour. He missed his country, his family and friends, but most of all… he craved the simple life …and Mexican food!

The Jam Session Grand OpeningSo he, and his long-time friend and colleague, Javier Ponton, decided it was time to establish a Music Club in Playa del Carmen where they could go back to doing what they love best: sing and play their favorite music (Rock, Blues, R&B, Country from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s). This Music Club would also be a forum where many other musicians and artists could perform and exhibit their talents, and where Renato could sing and play guitar, bass and harmonica to his heart’s content… and maybe even find the inspiration to start writing songs again.

The first time Renato visited Playa del Carmen it was still a small fishing village… and he immediately fell in love with the climate, the vegetation, the beautiful colors of the Caribbean and the people. He knew that this was where he would ultimately get away from the rat-race. Then, on one of his frequent trips to Mexico City, he met and fell in love with Moira, who works in book publishing and graphic design and shares his love for music. After a whirlwind romance, he persuaded her to move here with him (no arm-twisting was needed) and help him find the perfect space for the Club: it had to have enough room for a big stage, the right height and acoustics and, most important, a truly terrific atmosphere for both musicians and their —hopefully— abundant clientele.

Jamming at The Jam SessionIt also needed to be a enclosed space, to avoid bothering the neighbors with too much noise. Once they found the right place, they spend several months getting it into shape, so it wasn’t until mid-October of last year that they finally had their Grand Opening. Yeah! Great timing! Right before Hurricane “Wilma”. That was a jolting set-back, but not even the “Mother of all Hurricanes” could keep them down for long. They just dusted themselves off, made all the necessary repairs and re-opened the Club. By November they were up and running.

Since then, most local bands and musicians have performed at The Jam Session at one time or another, as well as famous —and not-so-famous-but-very-talented— musicians from Mexico City, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, France, Cuba, Jamaica, Canada and the US who love to come jam with Renato whenever they are in town. And although Javier Ponton still has many commitments in L.A., he and their other partners, Eduardo and Jan, try to get down here as often as possible to visit their friend and soak up the atmosphere.

renato-sting--javier-Playa del Carmen is growing in leaps and bounds and pretty soon the Club will not be on the “Tobacco Road” section of La Nueva Quinta Avenida… it will most likely occupy center stage with both locals and tourists, who have as yet to discover this “mystical, magical, musical haven”.

What an unforgetable and fantastic rainy night we had on the 25th June at the Jam Session. Leron Thomas popular Jazz trumpeter from New York , Moira, Renato and back up guitarist and vocalist sang "every song that driver knew" including all the Beatles favorites. Thanks for the memories. Peter K (Teenager in Love) from "Down Under".
