Brent Parkin: Blues man, guitar aficionado, and Playa del Carmen regular!

Brent Parkin has been coming down to visit Playa del Carmen, from his native Canada, for the past 7 years. Without fail he arrives for 2 to 3 months as he flees the cold winters of the great northern expanse of Winnipeg, Canada, and he blesses our community with some incredible musical talent.

When he first started coming down to Playa del Carmen he would bring his acoustic guitar, and jam wherever he could, whether it be at a local hotel, the beach, or some festive get together. Then about 4 years ago he got hooked into the music scene that was emerging from The Tequila Barrel. This is when he met Chivo Azul, Brad Ryan of Mojo Zone, and then he was introduced to Grady, and the crew at Captain Dave’s. Now every time he visits he sits in with Chivo Azul, and Grady over at Captain Dave’s, and he has created quite the fan base along the way.

Brent picked up his first guitar when he was only 14 years old, in 1965, and he has been playing ever since. Although his main focus has always been Blues, he has an eclectic repertoire of jazz blues, roots music, and even a little bit of country thrown in there for good measure. He is one of those rare and lucky musicians, who actually makes his living at his craft, and has been doing so since 1971.

Although he has become quite famous in our community, Brent Parkin, has an incredible following in Canada. He has been very well received in many famous jazz and blues clubs, music festivals, and countless events through out Western Canada. Although audiences support him with enthusiasm and undying support, he is critically acclaimed as well. Critics rave about his “superb guitar-based Chicago- style Blues, his “sensitively-constructed solos,” and his “urgent and effective vocal performance.”

He has 3 cd’s under his belt starting with Beep Beep in 1989, Treasure by the Long River recorded in 1998, and spanning to 2004, Rewind: which is a compilation of his previous works with added live recordings. He has been involved in countless other compilations as well, and brought home a Juno award, in 1993. . Although Brent has already returned back home to Canada, to embark on a tour, do not despair, he will be back!
