Check out some of these great local Mexican restaurants located in the Playa del Carmen.
By Sara Moen
Recently there was an article published on Food Republic listing the “top” 10 Mexican restaurants in Playa del Carmen. Although I am sure that all of the restaurants on this list are delicious and worth trying, 8 out of 10 of them are located within All-Inclusive resorts. And although all are open to the public their locations make them less accessible to locals and visitors alike. So after reading the article by Jasper White, titled Eat Like a Local, we decided to post our own list of local Mexican Restaurants. If you have one that you recommend that is not on our list, please let us know and we are happy to add it! Enjoy y Buen Provecho!!

Street meat and vendors:
There are a couple rules to follow when choosing to eat from a cart. Due to the fact that they do not have refrigeration always look for highly trafficked carts. A good rule of thumb is to follow the police and taxi drivers; there are a lot of them, and they love cart food! Also if you feel comfortable using some Spanish ask them how long they have been open, or ask them their hours in general. This will give you a good indication of how long things have been out. That being said we have tried many carts in Playa del Carmen, and other parts of Mexico, and we have had no issues. Here are a few that we suggest:
Empandas: Go in the morning and grab a couple of empanadas to go. They are cheap, greasy, and tasty. Don’t forget to ask for their salsa and cream. Located on 8th Street between 10th and 15th Avenues.
Tacos: We like to grab a taco or two for the road from the cart on Juarez and 5th right by the bus station. This is a highly trafficked cart, and we have gotten them at various times of the day and were all yummy!
Tamales: The tamale woman is located near the bus station on 20th Avenue and 10th Street. She has pork, chicken, and cheese tamales that are to die for.
Orange juice: There is a great OJ guy in the mornings located on 10th Avenue between 1st and Juarez. Get it by the bag or liter.
Various: There is a string of vendors located right by the Parque Fundadores located between 5th Avenue and the beach right down from Juarez Avenue. We suggest you get some fresh fruit from the fruit ladies!
Okay folks that is it for now! I am sure we have missed a couple here and there so let us know if you have a favorite place to eat delicious LOCAL Mexican food in Playa del Carmen, and we will add it to the list.
