The Quest of Finding a Job in Mexico Finding a job can be a difficult task. Hold on. I stand corrected. Finding a good job can be a difficult task. No matter where you live, good jobs are always in demand. Obtaining one should not just be left to luck; you need to know where to look. It also can depend on who you know or being in certain places at certain times. Knowing where to start, at least, is the key. When looking to move to Mexico, unless you are in retirement mode, you will eventually need to find a good job. Now you could up and move to Mexico on a travellers visa, find a job and then apply for a more long-term visa, (refer to my last article for information on visas), but from what I have heard, it is a much bigger hassle to get a visa in Mexico, then getting one in your home country. Sometimes you might not even get the visa in Mexico even if you have a job! (Not that it is a sure deal at home either.) I would recommend finding your job from home, having everything planned before you arrive. With an FM3, you need to be sponsored by a company to acquire one. Some companies will get the visa for you, but others will not. So look around! You might find yourself in the right place at the right time, you never know!. Start your search for a job early. It may take months to find one that fits. The more you look around, the more different options will become available to you. There are a wide variety of jobs available. English teaching jobs are very numerous around Mexico. If you are not qualified to teach, there are thousands of resorts and hotels around! However, jobs like watering, bartending and maid are usually given to the locals. In order to hire a non-local employee, a company in Mexico must show that they need you because you have a certain skill, like speaking English. Resorts have many uses for English-speaking folk. English speaking positions are available in, entertainment teams, tour guiding or for customer service. You just need to look around. Real estate agencies are also all over Mexico. You might have experience with that, but if not, you may not need experience. Giving yourself time to look around is your best bet, you never know what opportunities are hidden away or might pop out at last minute. Deciding what you want to do can also take some research, that is why it is so good to look around. Think about your personal skills. Maybe you have been working for years and can look for jobs in your area. Maybe you are just graduating and are looking for a new experience. Start with the general searches and see what pops up. Think about what you would want to do. Just like finding a job at home, do not take one you will hate. The challenge is finding a good job.
Talk to people! You need to dig deep to find a good job. Sure you might find the odd advertisement for a resort that needs people, or a real estate agency that needs a sales person. If that is for you, then great! But if it is not, start going underneath the surface, e-mail people and companies. The people you talk to at the beginning might not have a job for you, but maybe they know someone who does. You need to look around, talk to people and ask questions. Just like I mentioned earlier, it can be a matter of who you know, and being in the right place at the right time. When you talk to people about job possibilities, make sure you are friendly. Why will they want to talk to someone or help someone who is not nice? But be yourself! I would not think you would want to be presenting a false persona, even if you can put on a good act, it is dishonest and a little degrading for yourself. If whom you are talking to does not have any job opportunities, ask if they know a company who may. You need to ask intelligent questions. Do not get frustrated if you cannot find opportunities right away, just keep looking because they are out there.
When you have found a few possibilities for places to work, get right on it and talk to some people! While you are talking to the companies you need to keep in mind why you are right for the job. Have a resume on hand so you can send it to them. Prepare good questions that you will be able to ask them. Encourage the company to ask questions about you as well as asking them intelligent questions. Asking good questions will show that you are interested and determined. The fact that you want to move away from a country into a totally new one shows For new adventures, Mexico is a great place to work. Many people flock down there for new experiences, so why can’t you? There are many opportunities waiting for you to discover. Get started and who knows what you might be doing in the next year! Best of luck and have fun! that you are very determined and are willing to take risks. There are many things about you, which show other traits such as certain skills, personal management and teamwork abilities. You need to make these known when you present yourself. Having a good resume is an excellent start.
