Christmas palm treeThe lighter side of living in ……the tropics at Christmas!

By: Suzanne

Happy holidays! I really feel like Christmas now. The snow is gently falling......wait a minute.....that's Shawn and the kids throwing sand in the air.

Ha! Next they will be telling me that is Santa's yacht out there.....I know better - it can't be Santa he's busy at the north pole.

Anyway everybody knows Santa while in Mexico likes to swing from house to house through the palm trees. It drives the reindeer nuts.

Actually I feel like Christmas because my cherry chocolates are all made. Now that was a task. The truffle mix kept sticking to my hands - so I had to lick them off every time I wrapped a cherry - don't worry I also washed my hands between each one. Needless to say I was a little short of truffle mix and very buzzed on chocolate at the end. I think I need extra yoga and aerobics this week.

In case anyone feels like dropping by for a visit I also have made nuts and bolts, fudge, mini brownies, pecan squares, maple walnut cookies, crystallized nuts, and cinnamon bars. What can I say? I have now mastered a gas oven. I may yet make a few more things as my family seems to think it is already Christmas and keeps eating them. I will also make our puppy, Mika some dog biscuits and mini puppy nuts and bolts this week. So we will all be at aerobics this next week.

Now comes the season of parties, after all what else can you do in Mexico over this time frame because so many important offices are closed? They must know what they are doing; so we should close too and go party!

We will be spending Christmas Eve (known as Noche Buena in Mexico) with friends. We will be skipping the traditional Christmas feast of some kind of salted fish and wild greens in mole sauce (did that last year). I will however, keep the tradition of ponche (a hot punch made with exotic tropical fruit).

Christmas Day we have some friends coming over for a quiet Canadian Christmas dinner. I even managed to find cranberry sauce. We will also laze around under the tree and eat whatever is left of the treats. Actually some will have been given away as gifts - maybe I should make more.....

The fun will continue even after New Years Eve with Dia de los Reyes (Three Kings Day) on Jan. 6th. This is the day the three wise men are said to have found baby Jesus. I love that day as we get together with friends again and eat yummy sweet bread called Rosca de Reyes and drink even yummier Mexican spiced hot chocolate. Baby dolls are hidden in the bread and whoever gets them has another party with tamales. Yes, Mexico agrees with us.

Life is good. We are healthy and happy. What more can you ask for?

I am wishing you good health and happiness for Christmas. Feliz Navidad!
