The lighter side of living in Playa……….. Buying a house Ever thought of moving to Playa and buying a house? We did and that means it must be super easy for you too. Yeah right! Well it is really kind of… the buying is the easy part; It’s the moving and the fixing up and the changing of your phone and internet and all the other stuff that can bog you down. Let me fill you in. We started by finding the perfect house – well, it will be perfect with just a few changes. We have a bi-lingual lawyer and notary so the paperwork was very straightforward. Yes, it is true the day after possession we arrived just in time to pack and move the previous owner. Relax I do not think that is a Mexican custom. It just happened to happen to us. As a side note; he also lost almost all the keys to his house – started by replacing locks. The house needed a little paint so painting only took two days. We wanted to do it ourselves for some reason. Good thing we did it back to back because even after a shower I still had paint left on me. The speckled look is in right? Too bad it’s gone now. We had 3 men take 3 truckloads of garbage and yard clippings away. Labor and trucking is very reasonable. The kitchen renovation will be next before we add another bedroom. Work is very reasonable and fixtures for the house are pretty inexpensive here. We know this because we had to buy a few things and still need a few more. Now it will just be a question of getting the workers to actually show up. Just because they are a little late with the estimates is no indication of work ethic right? Only 3 visits to the phone company to get a new line and it should be here any day. After that the internet connection will be a swift 2 or 3 or 4 days. We also need to buy all the pool cleaning supplies. I thought the pool looked a little dirty. Not a problem as this can be found easily. I would not trade any of the experiences so far of new home ownership in Mexico. I love Mexico and the people and our new house. Want to join me in the joys of home ownership? If you have any questions just call my cellular, I'll have it hanging off my construction helmet. My conclusion; home ownership in Mexico is as easy as anywhere else.
