I was recently invited by local business owner, and active Rotary member, Thed Petterson to meet the Swedish Ambassador to Mexico. Thed, originally from Sweden, has been in Playa del Carmen for many years, and is the co-owner of La Rana Cansada, and has often arranged interviews and sit downs for me with various officials over the years. So when Thed called and invited me to meet and interview the Swedish Ambassador to Mexico I jumped at the opportunity. Anna Lindstedt is originally from Lund, Sweden, a university town in Southern Sweden, but she moved to Stockholm when she decided to venture into the world of Foreign Service. After postings in Indonesia and Pakistan she was first appointed as an ambassador to Vietnam where she stayed for 3 years prior to moving to Mexico in 2006. As the Swedish Ambassador to Mexico she is the head of the Swedish Embassy as well as the overseer to the 5 honorary consulates in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Cancun, and Veracruz. Her primary role as the ambassador is to promote a bi-lateral relationship from Sweden to Mexico, and to help create a positive relationship in both business and politics. Both as an ambassador, and as a tourist, Anna has visited 26 out of the 31 states in Mexico, inaugurating new Swedish owned companies as well as experiencing all that Mexico has to offer; culture, one-of-a-kind archeological sites, incredible cuisine, and extraordinary art. She went onto say that “Mexico is a great country to travel in.” And when she first visited the Riviera Maya in 1988 she “…fell in love with the country.” This visit to Playa del Carmen, and the Rivera Maya was only her second in 20 years, and in her few days here, Anna was kept busy visiting local agencies as well as connecting with our prominent Swedish business community; the President of the Municipal, DIF, a Swedish meet and greet, and of course a visit to the Rotary Club, were all on her agenda, and gave her an overall impression of the area. She commented that although the changes were obvious from her visit over 20 years ago, that the area was handling and managing the growth well, and that the Riviera Maya has a lot to offer both visiting tourist as well as year round residents. I found that Anna Lindstedt was not a stuffy political type, but rather an accommodating, well-informed ambassador, that was generous with her limited time to sit down with me, and it was appreciated!!
