By Krisitn Hahn Where does all the water go? Where do our drains, toilets, sinks, and showers empty into? Unfortunately the answer is not a very good one! The average hotel guest creates 65 gallons of water waste per day, and when we multiply that by how many visitors that come to Playa del Carmen, we are talking about millions of gallons of water waste, per day, that have no where to go. But wait, not all is lost, there are solutions, but they take a commitment to and from our community..... There are no water treatment facilities for Playa del Carmen as a whole or for the majority of smaller businesses. By having more hotels and restaurants commit to responsible tourism and business practices we can all benefit. Pixan-Ha (meaning soul water) is a local company based out of Puerto Aventuras. They have taken on the arduous task of educating, marketing, and installing water treatment systems, specifically sewage, to both businesses and residential clients as well. Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, Pixan-Ha is an off shoot of Aquaserve, a company that has been working, both nationally and internationally, to install water treatment systems for the past 14 years.
The majority of people are not even aware of what is going on in regards to water treatment or waste management here in the Riviera Maya. It is not that they don’t care, it is just not that often that people, especially on vacation, ask the question, where does our water waste go? But Gerardo says there are things we can do about it. First and foremost start choosing to support businesses that do comply with environmental guidelines. All of the hotels in Playacar have internal waste treatment systems integrated into their buildings, and Puerto Aventuras has a similar system. Xel-Ha, Xcaret, and Garafon, in Isla de Mujeres are all taking responsibility and have installed sufficient water treatment systems to accommodate the millions of visitors they receive a year. Ask a hotel or restaurant about there water treatment systems, and if we keep asking and demanding change it will happen. We have to work together and we can make a difference!
Pixan-Ha is located in Puerto Aventuras. They have been involved in hundreds of projects both in Mexico and Central America (Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, and Costa Rica), and only hope to keep growing. Father and son team Jose and Gerardo Garcia are the founders of the company, and Gerardo arrived just this last May to open their office in the Riviera Maya. They have been serving the Riviera Maya for the past 11 years. He says it is difficult is to try and get the word out to both year round residents and tourists alike , but we need to take action now in order to preserve our pristine waters and incredible landscapes.
