helmet lawPassengers Must Wear Helmets Too!

Police Enforcing the Law!

by Kawt Widmi Pantzdown

Well, it happened to me twice and thus it must be true……..

I got stopped by the coppers not because I was wearing a helmut, but because my passenger was not……… since when was that a rule?

You see, here in Playa del Carmen, a helmet rule went into effect back in March whereby everyone who rides a motorcycle/scooter must where a helmet. So we all went out and bought token helmets to comply. We hate them because they are so hot and being we live in an perpetual oven, who needs to be more hot eh?

It looks like an island, it feels like an island, it has the beautiful vegetation of a tropical island but it just happens to be made of spiraling pop bottles. Who would have known and more importantly who would have thought it possible?

A man named Reishee Sowa that is who. This island is his inspiration, his baby, his dream. With the help of friends met along the way and a lot of hard work his dream has become a reality.

The Allure of Mexico - Why Do So Many Foreigners Yearn to Live Here?

After living and working in Ecuador in 2002, we didn't think life could get much better. But we must admit...we've fallen in love with Mexico. Just the name Mexico inspires a host of alluring images...moon-lit fiestas, strolling mariachis, relaxing white-sand beaches, ancient colonial towns set in the rugged Sierras, even more ancient Mayan pyramids rising from the misty Yucatán jungle.

Yes, Mexico has it all...rich culture, perfect climate, affordable living...not to mention mountains, beaches, deserts and just about every kind of landscape in between. For all these reasons and more, Mexico is one of the world's top destinations for those dreaming of a relaxed and romantic new life abroad....................

BORDERLINE BELIZE

The following is a chapter segment from the nonfiction travel memoir

Where the Sky is Born: Living in the Land of the Maya

Night had fallen as we pulled into the federal customs area at the border dividing Mexico and Belize. What is it about night border crossings that scares the bejesus out of me? I wondered as I gazed at a uniformed federale armed with M-16.

His outpost, dark and securely locked, looked like a third world Checkpoint Charlie, a scene out of a 50’s film noir.

"No pasa," he explained, when I rolled down the car window to ask for instructions........

tortillasBy: Mia Loveatin

Tortillas every meal (Recipe included)

Tortillas are of course the bread of Mexico. When the ancient Mexicans invented tortillas – their flat, round, unleavened bread – I think they invented the most versatile bread of all. It can be stacked, rolled, folded, torn, cut, and crumbled; it tastes good soft and hot, crisp fried, or toasted. It can be shaped with the hands and easily baked on an improvised griddle over any source of heat; it keeps well, and can be reheated later.

Mexicans are very wise when it comes to dishes too as you can even substitute tortillas for eating utensils by using them as a scoop, or as a plate when laid in the palm of your hand and filled with delicious food.

Mexican food

Mexican food is always a fiesta!

(Recipe included)

Synonymous with fiestas, gaiety, and color, Mexican food conjures up happy diners being serenaded by strumming mariachi bands under a canopy of stars and purple and pink bougainvillea.

That is how I always pictured it and now that I live here I would say that description is right on. Foods of Mexico are festive, colorful, often healthful, fun and perfect for sharing with friends. Do I hear a party about to start?

Pizza vs. Tacos The Battle for Mexican Hearts and Stomachs PDF Print E-mail

Fast Food in Mexico? Is the Taco losing ground to the Pizza?

Supporters of Mexico's traditional fast foods are battling McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut, KFC and other foreign chains that have taken a chunk out of sales of tortillas, tacos and tortas.

With the celebration of the first national Torta Festival in Mexico City, they hope to promote this overstuffed sandwich of crusty bread, beans and cheese. By showcasing the torta — in part by building a 75-foot-long version — they are also trying to encourage its makers to modernize and diversify.

"Mexicans will never stop eating tortas. It's our vitamin T," said Maria Isabel Vazquez, a 47-year-old government worker visiting the festival...............

It Ain’t Fair - The Car Registration Law Stinks!

Why is it that our timing seems to be always wrong?

We bought land in Playacar in July 2003 and, as I recall, it was raining. Joe, my husband, must have been bored because we came back as proud owners of a piece of jungle in Playa del Carmen.

Why not? The plans started to emerge and since we were to retire in a couple of years, we had plenty time. Right? Wrong!

Our course the best laid plans of mice and men did not work out. You see, Real Estate in the New York area had been soft so we decided to put our house up for sale and what do you know? It sold in one day! Ouch!
