Reports continue to unfold as electricity and services get restored to the areas south of Playa del Carmen that were most affected by Hurricane Dean:

Tulum after Hurricane Dean courtesy of Todo TulumTulum- Playa Paraiso sustained some beach erosion, and many of the small beach cabanas located at some of the small hotels were lost due to water damage. However, the pueblo of Tulum is fine and up and running with no damage to report. La Zebra Cabanas and Mezzanine, both located right on the beach: La Zebra is located near the entrance to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere, and Mezzanine is located just south of Paraiso, are both fine. We are still waiting to hear how Sian Ka'an faired, and as soon as we have an update we will certainly post that as well.

Bacalar- A friend of ours owns property right on the lagoon, and due to the fact that it is not directly on the beach damage has been mostly wind related and aesthetic versus having major structural damage.

Chetumal after Hurricane DeanChetumal- We have heard mixed reports from Chetumal, our states capital, but from what we can tell they did sustain damage, but were not hit nearly as hard as Mahahual. * If you have any photos of Chetumal we would love to post them!

Mahahual- Mahahual sustained the most damage as Hurricane Dean landed there as a Category 5 hurricane, which was the third worst hurricane in history to hit the small beach peninsula. Three thousand military personnel and 850 additional police officers were deployed to the state of Quintana Roo prior to Hurricane Dean making landfall. The majority of them have been sent south to aide in clean up and to aide the local people with food, clean water, clothing, and supplies. Volunteers left early this morning with supplies to help in the clean up effort, and many other businesses and organizations are collecting goods and donations to send south as well. If you would like to make a donation you can contact Tony and Cheri Head at the Luna Blue Hotel. They are collecting money via Pay Pal as well as clothing and household goods.
