By: Suzanne Bandick Owning a home in Mexico - is it different? Well, maybe a little. We now own a home in what is known as the Ejido; meaning it is a less developed area. That has a lot of pluses and a few interesting quirks. Buying water for instance; when we flagged down the pick up truck full of water jugs driving by our house, we were thrilled to find out a bottle was only 12 pesos compared to the 17 pesos we had been paying in our old neighborhood of Playacar. Two days later however when we flag down a different truck, we find out it will be 16 pesos. Why? Turns out the other was knock off water! Still purified and sealed just not name brand. You can buy all kinds of things from vendors slowly driving or cycling by in our new neighborhood. You know they are coming because they call out or honk, and the best play music. We have had gas, water, fresh fish, fruit, ice cream, and tamale vendors come by. I personally love it when the store comes to you. Then there is also the pleasure of hanging your laundry out in the sun and fresh air to dry in your very own yard. It is wonderful; but interesting in rainy season when you watch your clothes go through a second rinse cycle right there on the line. Not to worry, it never rains here for long – the sun comes out to dry it once again. It also seems to be less expensive to have work done in the Ejido. Of course we are using a local neighborhood carpenter and the glass and mirror shop is around the corner. They literally carry their finished projects to our door. It makes it very easy for them to go back and forth for forgotten tools. All in all, life in Playa del Carmen is fantastic! Owning a home in the Riviera Maya and having it in the Ejido is different but proving to be a great move. Maybe not for everyone – but we are definitely happy. I think we are staying; at least we better after all the work of fixing up the house. We still have a kitchen renovation to do - I am sure that will be another story.
