Now I Must Be Officially Allowed to Drive in Mexico?

Wow! I got my Mexican Drivers License!

I was born and raised in France, so, I got a French drivers license. Later moving to Germany, I needed a German License. Maybe I could have exchanged it? No, I had to redo the test, not the driving part but the written exam! They told me I could do it in French instead of German. At the time I thought that it might be easier! “Nope” something was lost in the translation and I flunked! After a dull “learn by heart” study, I tried again and passed!

Now I have two drivers’ licenses! Great! In the early 80’s I moved to the USA, and needed to have an American License. So I can exchange my license, Right?

No, I had to redo the written exam! And in English! No problems hey? I flunked! Not knowing the answer referring to the amount of alcohol in the blood! I knew it in a metric system, but I had no clue whatsoever what it could be in ounces! After a dull “learn by heart” study, I passed.

Now I live in Mexico! Right here in Playa. Last Saturday, I decided to visit the Mexican Motor Vehicle Bureau (Do we have that here?) armed with my Passport, my FM3, my required “Comprobante”, and copies of all sorts. I had to fill out an application, and when I saw that a toothpick was the tool of predilection for the blood test I suddenly remembered my blood type!

Also, I learned very quickly that “Edad” meant “age”. I had missed the question on the form, and was sent back in line without passing “GO” and collecting $200.

I was baffled by the efficiency of the service! Reminiscent of a boot camp! But what works, works! My Beautiful, tear proof, Mexican license shows the marvelous beach of Playa! Just for the look of it I urge you to do the same!

Here are some tips: No! No one speaks English! No! You cannot request another view on your license! The “Tulum” view is for the ones living South of Riviera Maya.

And I almost forgot – No! You will not make the examiner smile!

Who cares! I got myself another drivers license! And I have no intention to leaving Paradise anytime!
