With Growth Comes Choices and Competition.

As Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya continues to boom locals and visitors alike have more choices on where to shop, where to eat, where to work out, and in general where to go to get the best deal for your individual needs.  Businesses now have to compete for clients, and in turn increase their services, decrease their prices and offer unique amenities to pull in clients. Sams, Walmart, Mega Comercial, and now Office Depot have made it more convenient for locals, and are now keeping business here in Playa del Carmen rather then Cancun. Centro Maya and Plaza Las Americas will only add to our existing services benefiting the local economy as well as adding more  choices.

Although some resist the change it is a hard train to stop. The Kor Group, a major American development company has just spent millions of dollars on prime beach front real estate in Tulum, and although it has yet to be  disclosed what they plan to develop there, it is sure to bring more people and money to the area. The days of the quiet beach villages are a thing of the past as people from all over the world flock to the Riviera Maya searching for their own piece of the pie.

Where to work out?

Check out the 3 local area gyms and see which one will best suit your needs:

Muscle Beach: Now that Body Works has been turned into a restaurant Muscle Beach is now the oldest workout facility in Playa del Carmen. Located on 6th between 30th and 35th Avenues, it has now installed air-conditioning and added to its group fitness schedule. Sign up now and they will waive the inscription fee. Monthly dues are 450..00 for gym only, 450.00 for unlimited group fitness, choose from 1 of the following: Aerobics, Pilates, Tae Box, Kick Boxing Jiu Jitsu, or Spinning. For use of the gym and unlimited classes the cost is 800.00 per month. For personal training the cost is 100.00 pesos per hour.

Hours are Monday through Friday 6;00 AM to 10:00 PM and Saturdays 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM  For further information please call 984-803-0478

Area Fitness: Now with 2 locations Area Fitness offers a wide variety of services. In their Paseo del Carmen location they offer full gym services, and a plethora of group fitness classes including, but not limited to, Yoga, Pilates, Belly Dancing, Body Pump and Fat Burner. They require no inscription, and the monthly dues are 750.00. This includes unlimited group fitness classes and unlimited use of the gym.

Hours are 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM Monday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM  on Fridays, and 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.

Their second location is on 10th Avenue  between 38th and 40th. This is a smaller facility and offers full gym services, and Spinning is their only group fitness due to space constraints. They offer personal training for 150.00 per hour, with bulk packages offered for discounted rates. They are open the same hours, and are currently running a promotion, a 2 for 1 inscription fee of 500.00  pesos, and monthly dues of 450.00 per person. The Gym: Part of the New York based Equinox Gym, The Gym is the new "hot spot" work out facility. With its prime location on 1st South between Constiuyentes and 16th Street, and its brand new facility and equipment, people are flocking to sign up. They offer full gym services and 2 simultaneous group fitness classes for most of the day. They have extensive yoga classes, spinning, kickboxing, and Pilates among their choices for group fitness. They do not require an inscription at this time, and the monthly dues are 800.00 per month with everything included. Personal Trainers run 250.00 per hour and you must purchase them in 10 session blocks.

They are open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday. For further information call 984-873-2098

Whether you like the old school of Muscle Beach or the swank of Area or The Gym, all are good choices to get in shape! Also all gyms offer visitor passes, just inquire at the individual gym you would like to attend while visiting Playa del Carmen!
