Escape from the Cube By Gary Isse Eight months ago, I decided that an office cubicle was no place for a human being to spend the majority of his or her life. I was working for a Fortune 500 company, climbing the corporate ladder, motivated by the many promises of a bright future with unlimited potential. The problem was, the people making me these promises did not seem very happy with their own lives, nor had they very much to show for their work other than material things. Don’t get me wrong. I desire nice things just as much as the next guy, yet, I also desire happiness.... Sure, I completely agree with those people that said, "Just hang in there. You’ll be out of the cubicle soon." My only argument was "To go where?" Eventually, I would have made it into an office, maybe after a few years to a great corner office with a spectacular view. Aside from the view, however, what difference is there really between an office and the cubicle? The office simply has thicker and higher walls; all the better to keep you enclosed, oblivious to the beauties of the outside world, working until all hours of the night. Some had argued that my problem was that I didn’t live a very balanced life. My life was 90% work and 10% complaining that I didn’t have time to do anything but work. Maybe they were right, maybe they weren’t. But, considering that I would be turning thirty in a little over a year, I really wasn’t willing to waste anymore of my life trying to figure it out. The fact was: I just wasn’t happy where I was. So, in January of this year, I escaped from the cube in search of happiness. Eight months later, after searching online and traveling to various places looking for happiness, I ended up here on a beautiful beach in Puerto Morelos. It is only a short trip, I haven’t yet figured out how to make a living in a place such like this, but I did stumble across the Playa Maya News and an editorial asking people to write articles for the paper. It was while writing this article, that I realized something: Happiness cannot be found in a cubicle, an office, or a car or home. Happiness can be found in very brief moments; Moments such as the birth of your child, your wedding day, or while sitting on a lawn chair by the pool in front of the beautiful beach writing an article for the Playa Maya News.
