Alux The Kewlest Place in Playa del Carmen

Alux (Alloosh) goes underground, reveals it's past - Magnificent! Glorious!

by J.P. the Cave Dweller

It’s late at night, you’ve just spent all day at Mamitas Beach tanning, swimming, and prancing around checking all the beautiful people………another great day in Playa.

So you go back to your place, jump in the shower, relax a bit more, and go out passed the Carretera Federal to see some place that’s supposedely an underground Cenote Cave that is now a trendy lounge .

You gotta be kidding! Right?

So you make it to the front of the place and look down the candle lit stairs and find the weirdest place on the planet……….No folks, this is NOT Disneyland or an Indiana Jones movie……..no way, this is the real thing.

“Oh my, we’re in an underground cave” mutters my significant other. Yes sweetie, feel that air, that odd sense of humidity mixed with coolness. “Martini Please!”.

So before we sit down, we need a tour.

Our waiter –err - guide named Maximo took us deep in the cave and told us how it was made over the last thousands of years. Maximo had all the answers to our questions - who owns it, how did they find it, will it cave in, how do you get air down here, what is that?

Gosh, we were hopeless tourists in the Kewlest Place in Playa.

The unique geologic conditions and atmospheric changes presented since the ice age gave way to the formation of an interconnected system of caverns, cenotes (deep underground water reservoirs) and subterranean rivers.

These caverns were used by the ancient Mayas as a refuge from atmospheric phenomena and, above all, for their connection with the underworld. One of these mystic places is the ALUX, home of little magic beings called 'aluxes', great guardians that are part of this fantastic culture.

After years of restoration and planning of low ecological impact, the cave / lounge presents humanity's heritage that’s waited thousands of years to be visited.

In these surroundings of true subterranean palaces, decorated with singular stalactites and stalagmites, you will definitely enjoy a natural show alongside a selection of regional and international cuisine, in a prehispanic music and dance ambient.

There are no words to describe how kewl this place is…….I won’t even try to explain. Just get down there with your favorite friends and go………..you’ll love it.

Say hi to Sergio, the owner and Cynthia their public relations director……….tell them J.P. sent ya.

Now, what I am thinking is that we throw a freakin party down there………I need to think, who, what, when……….man, it will come to me…………
