Next time you are at DAC pick up some of these incredible fruits, and you may be helping your lungs and breathing abilities!

The mango is said to have been around nearly 6,000 years, and it is native to India. In the 1700s, the fruit appeared in Brazil, and now grows in many tropical climates.  The majority of mangos are grown and exported around the world from Thailand, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Related to pistachios and cashews, there are over a thousand different varieties of mangos, and some weigh up to 4 pounds! Mangos have a long season, from January through August, peaking in June, and they are an excellent source of both Vitamin C and Vitamin A.

High doses of Vitamin C are a powerful antioxidant and anti- inflammatory agent. Its anti-inflammatory activity may decrease the incidence of asthma symptoms. A preliminary study has shown that young children with asthma experience significantly less wheezing if they eat a diet high in fruits rich in vitamin C.

In addition, diets high in antioxidants may protect against the free-radical-damaging effect of environmental toxins or cigarette smoke. Some studies have shown that eating more  fruit rich in Vitamin C may reduce the risk of developing chronic bronchitis. Mangos are also an excellent source of fiber, and a diet high in fiber can help prevent coronary heart disease. So, not only are these scrumptious, sweet tastes of sunshine delicious, they are good for you too!
