Just this last week, I heard of several incidences of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. So with the temperatures and humidity soaring, I am reminded of the importance of keeping yourself hydrated. As refreshing as it may seem, I’m not talking about a few cold cervezas! When body heat increases, the body removes it through the skin…you guessed it, sweating. No surprise there. However, when the humidity is high, sweat does not evaporate as quickly and has little or no cooling effect. Putting us more at risk in a climate such as this. So what’s the difference between the two conditions?
Local Chiropractor Has Some Valuable Advice on Sciatica
Friday, 18 August 2006
If you are suffering from what you think is a flare up in your Sciatica this may not be the case.
Many people come into
the office with their “self-diagnosis” already in hand. They have pain in the
low back, often longstanding, and now some pain radiating into the gluteal
region and back of the leg. We’ve all heard so much about disc herniations and
sciatica that immediately we fear the worst. But in many cases these symptoms
are NOT representing a TRUE sciatica (caused by disc herniation, stenosis of
the spinal canal, spondylolisthesis etc) and, although the pain can be very
severe, the patients prognosis is for an easier and faster recovery.
Dr. J. Alf Barajas, a local naturopathic physician tells of his experience of his first home delivery in Playa del Carmen.
Rodrigo is a carpenter; he makes those cool rustic looking signs on 5th avenue. His brother-in-law owns a candle shop on 1st South, and his brother is an upholsterer. All of Rodrigo’s family is from Uruguay. His wife Andrea was pregnant and had about a month to go when they visited us at our home. They explained that Andrea’s due date was the 20th of June. Almost “Summer Solstice” I mentioned. We were friends and had met about six months before when he and his family were our neighbors in El Colosio. He was a great neighbor and we often helped each other out when there was a need. He had known that we were starting an Alternative Medical Clinic here in Playa del Carmen, and that I was a Physician.
Hospiten Riviera Maya, located on the Federal Carretera at the second entrance to Playacar in Playa del Carmen, was officially inaugurated June 15.
Hospiten Riviera Maya is
the second hospital (after Hospiten Cancun) that the private health care group, Hospiten has in
Mexico. The opening ceremonies were attended by Felix Gonzalez Canto,
Governor of Quintana Roo and Carlos Joaquin
Gonzalez, Municipal President of the Solidaridad City Hall, as well as other
important figures from the worlds of politics, business and culture.
That’s what our new patient, Anabel, asked me on her first visit to the Center of Alternative Health NICTEHA. She was
looking to chiropractic for relief of her pain and tension between the shoulder
blades and lower neck. She estimated that the pain had begun three months
earlier and had been steadily worsening in spite of the two Tylenol and various
“sport crèmes and menthol salves” that she applied DAILY! What finally brought
her to us were the strong headaches and “torticollis” rigidity in the neck that
had begun one week ago.

The Science, Philosophy and Art of Chiropractic
The few doctors of chiropractic in this country that were educated in CCE accredited schools are constantly being asked by Mexicans and Gringos alike, “Is it massage? Is it like accupressure? You crack the bones in the back right?” The purpose of this article is to give a brief overview of chiropractic as it is currently taught and accepted in USA, Canada, and Europe and hopefully to dispel any myths regarding its efficacy and safety.
