Utilize the multiple benefits of Ozone Therapy at the SANAR Clinic in Playa del Carmen.
By Dr. Luis David Suárez
Some time
ago, my office door swung open to expose the battered face of a
60-something-year-old Vietnam vet. From a blood transfusion in the war, he acquired
Hepatitis C, and he came to my practice seeking the relief that acupuncture can
provide for chronic fatigue, a key symptom in Hep C.
"I also want
to receive "ozone therapy" while I'm down here in Mexico," he said. "It is
banned in the United States, you know, and I have read a lot online about treating
chronic viral infections with it". He
then asked, of course, what I knew about ozone therapy. My answer was: "Nothing."
Back then, all I knew about it was that we were destroying the ozone layer in
the atmosphere with our pollution and we were also breathing increasing
concentrations of this gas in large cities, with toxic effects on our
respiratory systems. Nothing about this ever made me suspect it had positive medicinal
purposes. After a few calls, I referred my patient to an ozone therapist in Villahermosa.
After a few sessions he returned a different person: his looks and stamina
completely changed. His skin was no longer grayish, he could walk more than 6
miles every day without experiencing fatigue, his appetite was back and he started
gaining some weight, and he said he was feeling the best he had felt in years.
So, for that
moment on, I embraced a personal and professional quest to find out, and learn
everything there was to know, about this gas and its uses in the field of
medicine. Now, after having gained significant experience in the field, I have
a confession to make: the more I know about it, the more I use it in my
clinical practice, the more surprised I am about the great results it renders
in a wide array of illnesses, making ozone almost the miracle drug. It is
amazing.
But, what is
ozone? Ozone is an allotropic form of oxygen. It is a molecule with three rather
than two oxygen atoms. That extra atom makes ozone a very unstable gas, capable
to react in fractions of a second oxidizing almost anything it is exposed to.
This gas occurs in nature: as a product of chemical electrolysis, high above in
the ozonosphere; it is also produced in breaking waves (surf) and when thunderstorms
strike. It also can be produced in the lab: when an electrical current is
passed through an oxygen flow, or by UV light irradiation. It is also a product
of some chemical reactions, i.e. the oxidation of phosphorus. Ozone is a very powerful
oxidant, widely used in sanitation and industry: for waste water and industrial
water cleansing, for food preservation and sterile packaging, for deodorization,
etc. Even the FDA and the EPA acknowledge its remarkable antimicrobial
capacities: ozone gas kills 99.99% of known human pathogens in water, thus it
is used worldwide for water and air disinfection.
In medical practice,
ozone is used primarily as a broad spectrum germicide. It eliminates viruses,
bacteria and fungi, and it is a powerful immune modulator, useful in autoimmune
disorders, allergies and immunodeficiency states. Ozone improves the metabolism
of oxygen, improving both venous and arterial circulation, thus enhancing the
delivery of oxygen to all tissues. Ozone, being a powerful oxidant, enhances
the enzymatic antioxidant system, fighting and preventing oxidative stress and
its consequences, like cellular ageing and death. It is also a very strong
metabolic modulator, with effects over the metabolism of cholesterol, uric acid
and glucose. And last but not least, medical ozone is used widely in pain
management because it can block the chemical cascade of pain and inflammation,
to the extent that it is now the therapy of choice for treating herniated discs
and infiltrating arthritic joints. If you look at the wide list of illnesses
that can benefit from ozone therapy, you might think it is quackery, as I had
originally thought. Now, I know it is not. It is simple biochemical magic.
